Length of Time to get SS#

How long did it take to get your child's SS#? I'm trying to decide if we should apply for the number before we finish the recognition of his adoption and do the name change in our state. (It doesn't take real long to do it in Kentucky)

I'd love to wait and just apply with his new name, but also don't want to be cutting it close for tax purposes.

Thanks everyone!

Kim

confused

hi,

i didn't think you could apply for a SS# until you officially readopted in your home state, changed the name, and got the new birth certificate. So I am confused how you could apply for a SS# without all that.

We are STILL in the process of readopting--we have the new decree but have been waiting 3 freaking months for the Pennsylvania BC!! My readoption is taking much longer than my Guatemalan adoption!

We didn't declare her on our taxes last year because we didn't have the SS#--we are just waiting until we have all the info and then we can just say we adopted her in 2006 (we got her in 2005) because that is when our state will recognize her adoption anyway.

Can anyone please clarify? I have also held off on applying for a passport for her since I didn't have the SS#--it's so frustrating not being able to travel out of the country since adopting her since she's not on a US passport. What documents do you need to apply for the passport? The state dept. web site is so confusing!

Ss

It took us a week. We went ahead and got a SS# with her old name so we could have it for taxes. When I went to the Soc Sec office they said it would be really easy to get the name changed. You just bring in the new birth certificate. We need the money back on out taxes this year.

We got a SS# for both of our children just a couple days after they came home. If you don't have a COC, they will be listed as a legal resident, but you can get their status changed later by going back and showing the COC. Also, getting their name changed with Social Security is very simple.

We got their cards 1-2 weeks after applying.

You can get the SS# under the name your child came home with and then do a name change at Social Security after all the readoption is done. In Massachusetts you have to wait for 6 months to do a readoption so I got his SS card now so I could file taxes. I hoped to do it all at once but that would have taken too long.

We got our daughter's SSN right after she came home (before readoption) for tax purposes. She came home on an IR-4 so she was classified as a resident alien. After readoption, we went in and changed her name on the card. And now that I've got her US passport I need to go in and change her citizenship status.

It took about 4 weeks for us to get her first card.

I am in KY and we received ours fast

IN the state of KY you can get a SS# without readopting. Even though we did readopt before we did our SS#, I on a tuesday and got it back the following Tuesday. It took a week! They told me to expect 2 weeks but it took a week.

I would call your local SS office to ask about it. Ours was really helpful. You can get the number off of the ss website.

thanks! i had no idea that you could get the SS# without a birth certificate. Guess we will finally be able to take care of that and declare her on our taxes, even though i don't think we will get any credit for her.

I did just find out today that the paperwork is finally in place for the Penna. BC to be sent out--that only took 3 months! Things are so much harder in our state I think and even harder if you weren't born in the country either.

Thanks everyone! I just expected it to take much longer than a couple of weeks!

It's very easy in Kentucky as we came home on an IR-3 visa. We just have to file one form to recognize the adoption, and then another form to get the name changed, then we fill out another form! to get a Kentucky birth certificate.

Time to get started!!
