Another developmental question-- first word

Here's another developmental question. How old was your child when he/she said the first real word (other than syllable babbling)? Also, if you don't mind, how old was your child when he/she came home?

Thanks,
Anne

Babies are all so different.. Bryce picked up on language skills really quickly, and she's been talking for a while.. She just turned 18 months, and she's starting to put words together.. Bye Daddy, What's that?, Me go, Sissy school?, pretty baby, etc... She came home at 6 1/2 months...

Our youngest son was domestically adopted, and we picked him up at 2 days old.. He didn't talk until he was almost 3...

Our DD came home at 15 1/2 months of age. Said her first English word at about 18-19 months. It wasn't until just short of her third birthday that she began putting words together into short sentences.

Last month she turned four. And now it's impossible to shut her up

Our son came home at 13 months and is now 17months. He still is only saying mama & dada - that's it. We're waiting for the flood gates to open!

My bio son was saying recognizable words by one year and talking in sentences by 2. My daughter came home at 11 months and had quite a few individual words by 15 months and was also talking in sentences by 2. My younger son came home at 20 months and we had him evaluated at about 28 months because he still only had about 25 words. By 3 he was putting words together, and now at 3.5 he has a huge vocabularly and talks incessently! When I had him evaluated, they told me there is a huge range of 'normal' and that he was the most 'normal' of my three. The other two talking early had me worried he was so far behind and he really was not at all.

Thanks. This is very interesting and helpful. I've been looking at some of the developmental milestone charts and I was starting to worry that my daughter doesn't really seem that close to saying any real words yet at 11 months. So many of the charts say that they "should" be saying a word or two by one year. Of course, that doesn't account for having your language change on you! It's helpful to hear about the variations.

I definitely worry too much!

Anne ~ I worried with our youngest son too! Our friend's children were talking circles around him.. But, by 4, he was caught up to everything they were saying ~ even though he didn't talk plain until after he started kindergarten.. We did notice that he was much more advanced with gross motor skills than most children his age.. His pediatrician said he was putting his energy into learning to run and being mobile rather than talking, so I worried less.. He's now 14 and is still a quiet kid but a very accomplished athlete!

At 11 months my daughter (home at 5 months) could say dada and mama, but that's it. At 14 months she could say about 10 words (quietly at best). But now at 16 months, she babbles and only uses a few words. It's like she forgot all the others, whch I've read is normal. I'm sure your little one is fine.
