Red face OT: Tonsillectomy

Wish me luck!! I am getting my tonsils removed on Thurs morning! Has anyone had them out as an adult? I hear the pain is unbearable.... I will be in a drug induced state for nearly a week or so.
I have been wanting something to take my mind off of baby Lincoln, well I guess this is it. I am sure the pain will distract me but this is not what I had planned!
Hopefully the next week and a half of recovery go by fast!

Jaime,
I had mine out when I was 17 and heard the same horror stories. Yes, it is painful, but before I had mine out I used to get strep about 5 times each year and I can honestly say that it didn't hurt much worse than strep. Just have plenty of Tylenol/Advil on hand. Actually, they'll probably prescribe pain medication. Just stay on top of it and don't forget to take it on time. Oh, and have plenty of cold stuff in the house before you leave the house so you'll be ready when you get home. Good luck!

I Did!~ Ouch!

"You know the saying becareful what you wish for..." Well, this is one of those times - keeping busy with something else would be much more fun and pain free!

I had them out almost four years ago at 35. It was horrible sorry to say. I have a huge pain tolerance - delivered both DD"s with no medication kind of tolerance. I cried every time my DH gave me the pain medication. I could barely talk, and had to learn how to swallow again.

Eventhough I do NOT suffer from the intolerable sore throats anymore - I can't imagine going through that again.

Sorry to say all of this right before you go through it. But I wish I knew and people didn't just say it was going to hurt because I was older.

My best friends husband had it done about six months after me and he felt the same way. Just seeing the words tonsilectomy - brings shivers to my spine.

I will say many prayers for you ~ that is as pain free healing as possible. Ice cream is YOUR FRIEND! I ate sorbet since I don't do dairy. Nothing too cold or too hot - I gargled with salt water as well to kill the bacteria from healing. No fun.

Good luck and let me know how you make out! I will be thinking of you.

I had mine taken out when I was 25. As I recall, the first couple of days were painful but managable with pain meds. I think the recovery time was about a week. It was definately worth it, I have only had a couple of minor sore throats since then, no strep. It's better to get it taken care of now before the baby is home (and a great excuse for ice cream) Good luck

I had mine out at 23. I lived on popsicles and ice for 3 days. Anything else was too thick. Liquid Tylenol with codine is what they gave me for pain med. I'll be thinking of you!!!! Let us know when you are feeling better!!

Oh my gosh - sure hope it goes smoothly for you!!

I had mine out as a kid, but (and those of you that know me will get a kick out of this) I was SUCH a talker that I pulled some stitches. It sounds worse than it is, but my Dr. kept telling my mom, "Keep her quiet."

I had had terrible strep so much, so for me, it wasn't much different. But I was only 13...

Let us know how you are doing and get some good pampering from others!!

That is funny but I am sure painful! I am quite the talker also and it is one thing that I have thought about. I guess I will have to resort to sign language!

I had mine out when I was 18 and had a bit of a hard time with it. But the pain medications will get you through it.
The good part was I lost about 10 pounds!
I hope all goes well.

Talking In Feb.

Jaime,
I had my tonsils taken out this Feb. I had gotten to the point that I could not breathe and actually had to be on steroids for 2 weeks before they would consider taking them out. I am an RN at a surgery center and had one of our drs take them out. He injected my tonsil beds with lots of local...I felt so good I went home and vacuumed (not a good idea). I actually went back earlier than expected. The worst time is when you first wake up, so you need to wake up and instead of whining take your pain medicine and drink a cold beverage. Pancakes with syrup was my favorite food...smelled great and went down easily. I had really bad referred pain to my ears (I am really ear sensitive though) and that was the reason I took the pain medicine. Good luck!!! If your throat hurts as much as mine did you will not even notice it!!! Good luck!!!!!!!!

Oh, the horrible memories this post has brought back.

My tonsil problems actually came to a head while I was a missionary in Guatemala. My tonsils were so swollen and had all sorts of yucky stuff coming out of them. Also in the process I lost about 40% of the hearing in one of my ears and had a constant echo in my ear. It was horrible. The church flew me back to the states to have them out. I was upset about leaving initially but I can't imagine having gone through the pain down there now.

I had mine out when I was 22. I have never been in so much pain. I could barely swallow my pain meds. Couldn't eat or drink anything and got deydrated. After the pain in my throat subsided, the pain in my ears became excruciating.

Take the pain meds and sleep it off. It didn't last more than about a week I don't get sore throats hardly ever anymore so it has been worth it.

I had mine out when I was 21. I had a reaction, but that was from the general, right after I woke up. They didn't do mine the stiches way. They did a cotterising of the area. It was sore, but no more sore than a bad case of strep. I had to have the pain meds every 4 hours... Keep up on those. Also drink or try to slide down something before the pain meds.

Also, with the cotterisin way you'll need a humidifyer. You need to keep your thoat moist. (it's basically a big scab back there and you don't want it to fall off) When awake I needed to drink something every 15-30 minutes. I just had to eat or drink cold stuff for the first 5 days, then liquidy warm stuff after that.

I had mine out December 19th, my Chirstmas dinner was mashed potatos, ice cream, and chocolate pudding.

I've only just got strep this past week... It's the first time since I got them out.
