My cat people, HELP again!

Here's the latest...Max came home yesterday evening. He was at the vet/hospital for 3 days. Not home even 24 hours and he has attempted to pee on my carpet. Finally went to the box, and only dripped. I am SO stressed!
This is day 18 of the problem!
He has seen the vet 3 times!
Was in the hospital 3 days!
Has had 3 shots!
Has been on amoxicillin, for more than 2 weeks!
Has had a cath. or what they call "unplugged"!
He had subcutaneous fluids!
He has been on special food for 18 days!
Today he seems weak. Although he is trying to be himself, he won't stand for any length of time. He prefers to lay down. He hasn't eaten much, and I haven't seen him drink.
Those of you who have experienced this....should he show signs of being better at this point?
I am SO confused and emotionally drained.
Please....anyone?

Hi,

I never reponded to your other post before because it looked like you had many responders, but my first thought in reading this post is.......amoxicillian is the mildest, usually the first antibiotic a vet/doctor puts an animal and/or child (my DD is on it for ear infx) on many times to see if the infx can be eradicated with it, if not, then they start working to a more potent antibiotic. I would talk to the vet about getting him a different antibiotic-especially since you are near the end of the treatment of antibiotics--2 weeks. By the way many years ago before becoming a teacher I worked as a vet lab and surgery technician. I did that for 5 years. That would be my first line of attack and definitely talk with your vet about how he is doing. Is he able to releive his bladder now. You can tell by gently feeling his abdomen area, if it feels like an inflated balloon then he is not able to pee... You may have heard of this all before, but Max still sounds like he is feeling ill.
I hope some of this helps.

Cindy

He is going to be irritated when he tries to go for quite a while. I use scoopable litter so I can make sure he is actually going. If he continues to act like he is in pain even when he isnt trying to go, or if he isnt producing anything, get him back to the vet ASAP...they should have someone on call even if it is the holiday...call and ask if you are concerned. I'd be most worried that he is not drinking anything.

Hope he is feeling like his old self again soon

I'm so sorry about your kitty!!!! We're going thru something with our dog and it is just heartbreaking!!! I don't have any answers for your questions but know that I've been thinking about him and I hope he gets better soon! We don't have cats because my dh is allergic, but I LOVE cats as much as dogs. I know that they are very special also!!

Unhappy

I don't post much but I couldn't help responding. I agree that you should ask your vet about changing antibiotics. We are on our 3rd with our cat for the healing of her gum where a tooth abscessed. Amox. is the mildest. We've used clindamycin, clavamox and even low doses of baytril (which my MIL's vet prescribed for her cat w/continual urinary tract problems too). It's time to bump up the antibiotic for your cat I would think. Wishing you the best. A sick furry baby is difficult and sad.

I am so sorry Max still isn't feeling well! And so sorry for your stress!

We had to switch antibiotics 3x to get the right one for our cat - we asked them to give it to her in a shot first, to get a good dose in her system. It was Baytril that finally did the trick. I would say if he has been on Amox for 2 weeks, then he probably needs something else? *Warning* The liquid Baytril made them froth terribly at the mouth and they HATED it. If you go the Baytril route, I would do shots or ask for pills.

I agree strongly with a previous poster that if he isn't able to go, or is in pain, get him to a vet ASAP!

Also, if he is not drinking - they get dehydrated VERY quickly - we had to give our girl IV fluids. You can pull up on their scruff and if it doesn't snap back quickly, you can tell they are dehydrated. Now they may be dehydrated even without this sign, but it is something you can try.

Also, is his nose dry? Warm? Cold and wet?

Sorry this is so disjointed - we are trying to get ready for Thanksgiving! I will Google later and talk to my vet friend.

Sending hugs to you and Max! This WILL get better~

prenisone

When my cat had problems with her bladder (she would urinate and only a tiny bit would come out because the lining of her bladder was irritated) and urinated on the carpet, my vet always gave me prednisone. You can get it in a gel that you put on the cat's ear or in a liquid that you can use in a syringe.

That always seemed to help.

One of my cats gets repeated urinary trac problems, no sooner would he get home from the vet, he'd start having problems again. He now has to be on a special low ash/low magnesium diet which has greatly reduced the problem to once every two-two and a half years. If the problem is his urinary trac, this may help. Good luck. I hope he's better soon.
