Totally OT: Work from home

I know this is totally off topic, but do any of you do some type of work from home that makes you some money? I really don't want to get scammed, and I know there are a lot of scammers out there.

I am an elementary teacher and have my Master's Degree. I could do proofing, typing, etc.

I don't want to do the home show thing.

Any suggestions? I would love to hear them!

Feel free to PM me!

Thanks!
Becca

Could you tutor from home? Several of my elem ed friends do that now that they have children and they get a lot of business just by word of mouth.

I have one for the teachers. I am a tutor online for Sylvan. It is not tons of money, but it is really easy, and the hours are good. (I work after Timo is in bed) All you need is a computer and DSL and they provide the rest. Since it is with such a reputable company, I can guarantee you that there is no scamming. I have actually been doing it since April. If you are interested, and need a contact #, let me know!

I'd love to hear about some legitimate oppurtunities, also. It seems everything I find on the internet is a scam, but I haven't researched it thoroughly, yet.

Medical Transcription

I have owned and operated a medical transcription service and school from my home for the past 5 years now. However, I must caution it is not a field for everyone and requires an in-depth education/training program of at least 18 months.

There ARE scams out there in this field as well. Lots of exaggerated promises of incomes of upwards of 40K per year in the comfort of your dining room with toddlers playing at your feet.

The first few years you can expect to earn about minimum wage until your speed and experience build up. 40K is not unheard of; however, not for at least 3 to 5 years.

Check out the US Department of Labor website for information on legitimate work-at-home opportunities.

Also, a word of caution about working at home with children (or adults for that matter ... It's not as easy as it may sound. It takes a while to get into a groove so it works for all involved... You, your family, and your employer/work situation. It can actually be much more difficult than working away from home in many respects. The demands placed on your day come from many different sources and setting limits and boundaries can be difficult at first, especially when it comes to your children.

Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have about Medical Transcription and I will be happy to answer questions or direct you to the best resources.

This is so hard because I remember looking into all sorts of things to work at home when my son was born. I went to a few seminars, sent away for information and kept feeling like I it was all underhanded.

What I ended up doing for extra income and to eliminate day care costs was to work a few evenings a week as a server in a fine dining restaurant. I don't work weekends (well, occassionally) but mostly Monday and Wednesday nights. Fine diners usually go out during the week and not on the weekends. The tips are great and it is a wonderful alternative to my previous full time high stress job. I really love my job and the people I work with. Mind you, I work for my family but it is still great. I leave for work when DH gets home and it gives him some special time with our son.

Good luck to you. I know what a hard decision it is.

I'm with Tara, I've always worked 1 FT & 1 PT job my whole life, upon bringing Anthony home we had discussed that I would be a SAHM, & am fortunate that I am able to do so, it's been a HUGE transition not working, but sooo worth it !
We brought our little guy home on Jan 6th last year & my time with him is priceless, seeing all his 1st's etc, but I did decide a few weeks to go back to my old PT job doing weddings, banquets, etc, I actually am working quite a bit, due to the holidays, I work on Mon & Tues late afternoon/evenings & Wed through Fri during the morning hrs (my parents have Anthony on those days, which we're totally grateful for, although they took him even before I started back working) & if we have no plans on a Sat evening or a Sunday afternoon.
It will slow down after the holidays & am looking for PT in an office 3 days a week & I'll keep my foot in the door & the Catering job, it's quick easy $........

It's whatever works for each individual & their family..

Good Luck !!
