What do I need to get a passport for our son??
I have receieved his COC, but mailed in the orginal for the name change. I can bring a copy, but what else may I need? We are going ahead with our second adoption and I just can not bear the thought of being without my son for any period of time.
Thanks, Kristin

We had to do a readoption to get the name change, even on an IR3 Visa-- but that varies state to state. This is what I had to send for the passport: ORIGINALS of CoC, new birth certificate with new name and re-adoption decree (to bridge the name change) along with the application and pictures. We got the whole thing back in about 5-6 weeks.

We had to give them the original CoC, old and new BC, copy of court ordered name change, Guatemala Visa, and Protocolo. All originals, so it was very difficult to do. They all came back in the mail just fine.
It's at the discrepancy of the employee how much "additional" documents they need. They wanted a lot in our case.

As Daphne said, the different employees seem to want different stuff. I called the national office before going to the local office and got my list from them. The local office then complied after originally different things.

Do you have any idea if I can get this without the orginal COC? The instructions told me that I needed to included it with the application for the new one. I did get a letter back that told me the processing time for this was ONE YEAR. I have already done the name change at the same time as the readoption here. Please let me know. Thanks a bunch!

Most likely you'll be asked for the CoC. Some people have posted that they have been able to get the passport without it. However, since the CoC has been a standard issue for almost 3 years now, they may not allow waivers. It was required for us earlier this year to get passports. The docs vary by where you go. Try different post offices. If you keep getting the same answer, you'll know. I don't know if the CoC is something they can "overlook" or not. Good luck and let us know what happens.

From what I can tell from reading, and from my experience, you'll need the original
Follow the link, then go to the application. Here's the link - Special Requirements for Children Under Age 14

a thought...
Could you use your son's Guate passport? It's valid for 5 years. My kids traveled 3 - 4 times w/theirs (we were slow on the name change paperwork...). You have to remember to put the ticket in the name as listed in the passport. My #1 traveled back to Guate. for our visit and pick-up trips for #2 on his Guate passport. No problems.
