Humidifiers...........Know of a good one?

Anyone have a good cool mist humidifier?

My little one has a cold (friend and daughter met us at the airport and they were BOTH sick so I assume that is where she got it). The doctor told me to use a cool mist humidifier. I have now bought 2 different ones and do not like either one of them. One does not seem to do anything at all and the other one completely drenched the carpet and everything around it.

Help and Thanks

We got ours at Kmart for about $50 bucks. It doesn't mist or anything. It has a filter that stays wet and works beautifully. I had to spend the night in DS's room shortly after getting it and I noticed a difference in about 15 minutes. We keep it high on a shelf so that he doesn't knock it over but even if he did, the water is secured under some plastic that there is NO MESS!! Very cool! It's made by Holmes. You can get a 1 gal or 2 gallon. They say the water lasts for 24 hrs. It doesn't. But since this is the 3rd we've had for our son... I say it is also the best. By far.

We have a steam mist humidifier we got from Wal-mart for $10. It works great! I have never found a cool mist one that seemed to work and they tend to grow mold worse, which is bad for allery sufferers. JMO! We keep it up out of reach of our son.

We bought the Vicks brand, in between the two prices already mentioned. It works very well. Nick's room is a medium sized bedroom and it functions well with that size room.

I live in the California desert and in the fall and winter, I have two humidifiers running constantly. We use a wood-burning stove to heat our house and the dryness from that creates so much static electricity that we can't even sit on the couch w/o being stuck to it.

I have found over the years that you basically get what you pay for. I have not found a humidifier less than $50 that is worth a darn. The last time I bought a humidifier, I bought it at Costco. I think it ran about $65. I remember buying a humidifier at Target a couple years ago for around $50 and it worked good too.

Just remember that you have to buy the additive that goes in the water in order for the humidifier to last. (I put one capful for every other fill up.) Also you have to replace the filter walls. (You'll know when that is due just by looking at it.)

HTH,
Carla
