You'd be FUMING MAD if you heard this....

I was listening to the radio this morning while on my way to the grocery store. The DJs were talking about Madonna being on Oprah today. They were describing the show and they talked about Madonna and the adoption. They thought they were making a funny joke when they said: "At the end of the show, there will be a special gift for all of the audience members. They will all be given a baby to take home". My jaw dropped and I couldn't believe that comment! Needless to say, that radio station is GONE from my stereo memory! I'm going to email the radio station too! So sad that people can just joke about that. What is this world coming too????

Does anyone watch saturday night live? Comments like the one you mentioned remind me of the news segment stories with Tina Fey. I take my adoption seriously, but sometimes things are just meant as jokes and I think it's okay to laugh. Well, at least that's my take. I just can't spend my energy getting upset over these comments. (But I am sorry it offended you, and understand that we all take things differently. This post is not meant to offend!)

Did anyone hear Tom Bergeron on Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday night?
He said something about the dancer who was getting kicked off might get lucky and Madonna might adopt them.
I just shook my head. It made me sad for Madonna's son David - like his adoption was just some big joke.
I sure would be FUMING mad if someone acted like our children's adoptions were a joke.
...and I like Tom Bergeron. I'm hoping that someone else wrote that joke and made him include it.
The audience didn't really respond.

No offense taken. Yes, I've seen SNL before (and I think there's a reason that it's on at 11:30 PM ). I guess everyone IS going to take things differently, but I for one continue to be amazed at the depths people will go to to get a laugh. If those of us who are offended don't speak up about what we see as offensive, then I think adoption (international adoption in particular) is going to just become one big joke in the media. An exception would be the neat link another member pointed me to that aired on NPR, by an adoptive mom whose children were born in Africa -- now THAT'S the kind of story I'd like to see more often!

I just got back from the hairdressers and in this week's Entertainment magazine (the one with Clint Eastwood on the cover) there is not one, but two adoption "jokes". I don't have the magazine with me so I don't have the exact words, but one remarked how things are quiet now in Hollywood because everyone is out shopping for Third World orphans, and the other stated Angelina Jolie's defense of a recent traffic accident in Asia where it was alleged she hit a young Indian is it was an express adoption.

On another (nonadoption related) board I frequent someone joked that orphans are the newest Hollywood must-have accessory and all over Hollywood those little dogs are being tossed out of purses to make room for Third World orphans.

I'm still not understanding what is so funny about celebrities choosing to adopt children who desperately need loving homes.

I agree, PiperCub, the comments were meant to be a joke....and I just have to look at it that way. There are just SO many other things in this world that are funny... And. like you, I don't spend too much time letting these comments upset me. It was just shocking to me. I would never let something like that come out of my mouth! It's just sad that some people find humor in the welfare of children.

Cindy,
I did watch "Dancing with the Stars" and heard his comment. I couldn't believe my ears I had to rewind just to make sure I wasn't hearing things.

I believe people will get back what they dish out. So for all those people I wouldn't want to be standing next to them anywhere.
