Parasites???

Has anyone's child ever come home with a parasite??? Was there a happy ending??? We've been home since Thursday night and all was fine until Friday when she spiked and fever, began vomitting and diahrea (like the doctors had never seen before). They sent her stool to the lab and we should have the results back tomorrow. Please pray that it is just a virus and that she recovers quickly! It's been a rough week! I'll post pick up trip pictures soon!

Heart just curious

did you stay at the marriott for pick up?

a few others have come home with children in the past two weeks who have all been really sick with the same thing your DD has.

our DD came home with high fevers for almost five days - i'm talking 104.9 and 105.5 with no other symptoms. she is fine now...not a fun first week home either.

about parasites - if it is that - normally is does NOT cause the symptoms you have mentioned. if she does have them it is NOT a new thing and has most likely had them for a while. look at the color of her stool and sometimes you can even see parasites moving around in it. gross i know but that is a sign they will ask for besides the stool sample.

parasites often take a little while to get rid of it - be sure to always scrub your hands after washing her and use individual bags for each dirty diaper just to be safe. change bedding often and her changing table cover if you do find out that it is indeed parasites.

my best friends sister brought home her son at 9 months old from ethiopia with parasites - it has taken almost a year with continual visits to childrens hospital to get rid of them.

there are some supplements and herbs on the market that you can give with medicine once again if she does have parasites.

i will pray for her that it is just a virus and the body is just working hard to get rid of it. try and buy coconut water if you can from a local health food store - way better than the other electrolyte stuff on the market and will help heal her tummy!

good luck!

Lifessence- Yes we were at the Marriott and I noticed many babies vomitting at the restaurant. I hope it is just some sort of virus/bug...I'm just a little worried!!!

My daughter came home in December with the Rotavirus. She had very bad diahrea and was in the hospital for three days the moment we got her home. The doctors said that she caught the virus in Guatemala and we were very lucky that she was home with us.
I will pray that your little one feels better soon, I know how rough this can be.

My daughter came home with bloody diarrhea that lasted on and off for a month. We never quite determined the cause, but she was eventually treated with Cipro. BTW--for babies, Cipro has to be hand made but fotunately we have specialized pharmacies nearby.

Fortunately, we live in a major city and I took her to a pediatric infectious disease doctor after the pediatrician was baffled. The ID doctor did many tests on her stool (we took in SO many diapers) but could never find anything.

It is very frustrating dealign with a sick new baby, but the good news is that the condition you are dealing with is treatable! Be assertive on your child's behalf and request an ID consult, if that is possible where you live.

My daughter is completely FINE now, but does seem to experience more GI issues that my other 2 kids ever have. For ex., when teething she will have runny, smelly, loose poop for a few days. But overall she is very healthy and fine.

Good luck and congrats on being home!

one more thought....

I just re-read someone's post and wanted to reiterate--WASH YOUR HANDS. I know this is obvious, but sometimes we do forget. It's busy being a mom!

ALso, I didn't let anyone else change my baby's diapers--not even family. We really tried to limit exposure to her illness that way.

Virus

Hi there,

I just wanted to let you know some of what we are dealing with here now. ROTO Virus is running rampid. My boy had it and a lot of other children have had it too. Ask your Dr. to test for it as they don't unless you ask for it.

Lot's of Pedialite to keep hydrated.

I hope everything works out.

John

It sounds like rotavirus to me too.. Bryce came home with it in Jan.. I actually rushed her to the ER in Guatemala City at 3 am one night because she would not wake up.. As the above poster said, be sure to give her lots of pedialite so she doesn't get dehydrated.. Does the diarrhea have an odd odor? Bryce's stool also had a slimy look to it the first few days...

If it is rotavirus, you will probably get it too... My husband and son's left GC before Bryce's symptoms started and were fine.. Our 10 year old daughter and I did get it too although we felt better after 24 hours.. Dr Montiel told us it would take Bryce 2 weeks to get over it, and that was correct...

I just wanted to second what Sassy' said. Mia has been home for a year, and I kid you not, she gets diarrhea type viruses about once every 2 months. Our ped. says some kids get more colds, and some get more stomach bugs. I also notice a correlation between when she gets new teeth. She gets a stuffy/runny nose and then a week or so of this nasty diarrhea. It is watery and has an awful rotten egg odor (sorry to be gross). It never stays in her diaper. We "double bag" her (we call it - a diaper with a pull up over top). I go through tons of diapers, clothes and sheets! UGH. It's not fun. FYI, our ped. says to "treat it" with tons of rice cereal and bananas, and rice in her food. We also immediately switch her off of milk and onto Pedialyte only for a week. All of the above really helps to control it and it does help "stop her up" a bit. She seems to recover faster when we really up the rice and bananas, and switch her to Pedialyte.

I hope your baby is better soon. It sounds like there was some kind of bug going around!

We got home Wednesday baby had diarrhea since Tuesday. Hubby began with diarrhea & vomitting on Thursday & Friday. Mother in law who was staying with us to help get settled woke Sunday with same symptoms and was hospitalized on Monday due to dehydration. I took Cipro while in GC and I did not have any issues. Dr. stressed keeping baby hydrated and has run a series of tests but with hubby and MIL symptoms he believes its a bug. Infants and elderly have the most problems.
Also really keep hands washed and dirty clothes/diapers away from "clean" sinks and tubs. Designate a sink or set up a pail for the dirty clothes and wash with a disinfectant. I use concertrated lysol added to the wash. Good Luck!! Do they make diapers that won't allow seepage??? Please let me know the brand if so...

Thanks all for your responses...just got the results back today and it is indeed Rotavirus...UGH...it's so gross and I feel so bad for our sweet girl. On top of that...my hubby is now vomitting...I have a sinus infection and diarrhea...my 3 year old son is the only healthy one.

Tomorrow is my Birthday...can I delay it for another week???? Hopefully we'll be healthy by then!!!

THANKS AGAIN!!!
