At what age can a child eat peanut butter

Just wondering if anyone knows the age when it is "OK" to eat peanut butter. My first never liked it and I can't remember when I fed it to her. My little one loves food and is almost 2. I eat peanut butter crackers all the time and she wants them, but I have been afraid to give them to her. Just wondering when you fed your children peanut butter.

I think different pediatricians are going to say different things. I think with peanuts they are most worried about allergies.

Our pediatrcian said that once our son turned 12 months old he could eat anything we ate. And that included peanut butter.

Our doctor said 12 months old. My brother had a peanut allergy (a pretty mild one - hives, etc. not breathing problems), so I was very cautious with my bio son, and started with a little on his skin to make sure he wouldn't react. Then a small taste.

It is entire food group in and of itself at our house!

Our pediatrician said 12 months, as well. We started very small, just a taste or two, and waited to see if there was any allergic-type reaction in either of the girls.

Another issue with peanut butter is choking

I have read 12 months also and you just have to be careful , as with anything that they don't get a mouthful that they can not swallow easily. My 18 month old LOVES PBJ and has for some time.

If your daughter has other allergies, asthma, or eczema, avoid the peanut butter. Those things are all related. If you do try it, I would give her a very small portion (1 small bite) and wait to see, before giving her a full serving. My son is severly allergic to peanuts and his reaction was immediate.

I wouldn't even try PB until at least age 3. If you have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's or any other "health food" type store you can buy alternatives like soy nut butter. My 2 year old is allergic to peanuts. I gave her peanut butter after she turned 2 and she had an immediate reaction. She LOVES soy nut butter so we do that.

peanut butter at age 1...

I heard peanut butter should not be given till at least 3 yrs of age. Its considered one of the 'choking' foods. A child can choke on it.

if you do decide to give your child peanut butter after 1 yr of age, i would suggest that you know what to do if your child starts choking. Just in case....

in case you wondered, here are other foods that a child under 3 shouldn't have, whole hot dogs, nuts, chunks of meat, whole grapes, hard or sticky candy, popcorn or raw vegetables.

these also may cause choking. Just an FYI

I started giving Isaac PB after he turned one. I put it REALLY thin on a slice of bread and fold the bread in half. We have never had a problem. I am a nurse and know what to do if he would choke. I think you just have to know your child. Isaac handles grapes, no problem and same with hotdogs. I just slice them and then slice then in half again. We also give him whole chicken nuggets and fish sticks and he bites off small pieces. We don't give him hard candy or popcorn yet though. He is 16 months old.

We were told to wait until after he was 2. Kids are deleloping peanut allergies at an alarming rate these days, and they don't really know why. We gave our son cashew butter or sunflower seed spread from Trader Joe's until adding peanuts a few months ago (He's 3 & 1/2). He'll take any kind of squished up nuts now.
