White or clay-colored stools can be a sign of problems with the gall-bladder/liver. If there is an obstruction or atresia (non-development) of the ducts leading from the gall bladder, the stool remains white. Usually the infant is somehwat jaundiced because of this. If only one stool was white, the rest normal, I wouldn't worry...but if all were abnormally pale, ask your agency about advocating for a visit with a gastroenterologist, or about requesting liver function tests (measured in blood) and an abdominal ultrasound to look at the liver/gall bladder/bile duct collecting system. At the very least, ask them to make SURE the doctor seeing the baby has been informed...they don't always see the poops at every visit! If you have identified a pediatrician that your child will see, or have access to am international adoption specialist in your area, this would be the time to consult. A letter from them will carry more weight than "someone on the forum suggested....." Good luck...I hope all turns out well.

I copied this from the Web MD site, I will be praying for you and your baby,

When to Worry:
  • If the color of your baby's stools stay chalky white, there may be no bile from the liver to digest the food.
  • If the stool is tarry black, there may be blood in the digestive tract that has turned dark black as it traveled down the intestines.
  • If there is bright red blood in the stools, there has been some blood expressed very close to the anus, (i.e. no time to turn black).
You don't need to worry about green, orange, and yellow stools. They are par for the course and are rarely a sign of a digestive problem.

Just curious if there was a reason why she is not on solids yet? I just learned that the purpose of adding rice cereal at six months is for the iron.

Sorry, I don't have any answers for the stool question. I am sure the pediatrician will be able to help.

A tought-My babies also had very light stools at pick up and I think they had a lot of rice cereal bottles eventhough we were told they were only on formula. Did the stool change over the time period you visited? My one daughter was sooooo constipated from the cereal. Their stools changed within days of us feeding them only formula. Anna

I second what above posters said.
1.Babies should NEVER have cereal or solids in their bottle - choking hazard, causes problems with **.

2. At 7 months they need other food for the iron. Does she have anything besides milk?

3. Babies whose milk consumption is too high tend to be anemic - strange for a 7 month old, but have seen many many 18 month and older with this because parents give bottles (too many), constantly top up sippy cups etc and they fill up on milk instead of food - therefore anemic.

4. Did you say she was having milk??? as in regular milk??? this can cause severe anemia. A 7 month old needs formula or breast milk. Can you check up on this?

5. I woud get her checked as well, by a Dr over there.

Usually these digestive things aren't nice but clear up. Investigate her diet as soon as you can.

It could definitely be the milk especially if the baby is constipated. The baby definitely also needs to be on solids and hopefully the 'milk' is formula.

Yes, the Milk is Formula.I am Now Full of Worry. What are we suppose to do?I know we could get on the Agency for this, but what if she is not seeing a doctor (at our request)? How are we suppose to be sure she is being taken care of?I feel Helpless.I would want the liver test and things done on her.I have not gotten a doctor's report since she was 3 months old.All I know she is very sick.

Do you guys get shot records and stuff?
Thank's for all your help!!!

Ok. This must be very stressful, but again refer to the list I posted and call your agency in the morning. that is the first step.
A good agency will be able to help and should be proactive in making sure the children are healthy. Discuss with them a PROTOCAL of what to do if a baby is unwell- they should have guidelines as to what to do.
Yes, the baby should have seen a Dr since her 3 month check up and should be having vaccinations. I would ask the agency about this.
Try not to worry too much. Call the agency first thing in the morning, look up the number (through google) of the Dr people mentioned in Guatemala and phone him too.
You should at the VERY LEAST (and this isn't asking too much) get the foster mom to take the baby to the Dr and he can do a basic assessment. From there more can be suggested after blood test and nutrition info.
Do you mind me asking how much she weighs?

white stool

Snook182,
I emailed you, but had another question. You say she is very sick, does she look sick? Is her weight normal. My daughter had white stool, but otherwise looked healthy. You definately need to insist your agency has her seen by a dr. My agency faxed me all the test results and I had a dr. here look at them to put my mind at ease. My daughter also had giardia when she got home, but I don't think that caused the white stool. Good luck,
Mary

when i went to visit my daughter she had diarrhea every bowel movement. I contacted her pediatrician(in guat) via email and told him of my concern, he replied and made a point of checking her at next visit. Check your paperwork - referral stuff etc and see if it has her pediatrician listed. You can find them on the internet
