Dumbo the Movie and Abby
Abby got the movie Dumbo as a birthday gift. So, the first night we were watching it and it comes to the part where they were picking on Dumbo and the mom starts taking up for him and the circus people are tying the mama up, Abby starts saying " sad, sad " in this sweet little sad voice. Then it switches to show the Dumbo and Abby says "awww, awww" like she feels sorry for the baby. It is just so pitiful in her little voice. So, now when she watches it and it goes to that part, she comes running to me and saying "sad, sad" "dora, dora" "turn off, turn off" like she wants me to turn Dumbo off because it is sad. I didn't know that a child at this age could understand emotions. I thought this was a sweet but sad little story.

I don't know how old your daughter was, but at 16 months or so, my daughter did the same thing for anything with something sad (or scary). It is so sweet the emotions they can express (and pick up on!) so young.

Those Disney movies! Sheesh. They're designed to create havoc in little emotions.
I was so upset over some as a child that Dumbo, Bambi and Old Yeller are banned from my house. (And don't get me started on Pinoccio!) If the kids want to watch them, they can rent them when they're 21! |

Our first daughter watched Dumbo at about the age of three. I don't even know if I'd ever seen it myself, so I didn't recall that the mother was tied up and taken away. Our daughter sat there very quiet. I could tell she was worried. I told her it was ok to cry, because it was sad. She burst into tears and sobbed! I can see why it would be traumatic for a child. I never showed it to any of our other little ones. Our daughter is now 24, and very well adjusted!
