OT: Painting woodwork
My mom would kill me if she knew but ... We have this ugly banister, I MEAN UGLY. I really want to sand it and paint it white.
Has anyone done this? If yes, any advice on keeping it from wearing off? Thanks,

I've heard an oil based is best to keep from markings and scratchings...good luck!

My best advice is to make sure you use a really good primer before you paint, it will help the paint stick better! Good luck!

I agree with both posts above... Use a really good primer and follow directions on how long to wait between primer and top coats ~ primer should be given time to set and thoroughly dry.. A good oil based paint is easiest to wipe clean ~ especially on a banister that will be getting a lot of hands on..
Be sure to have whatever paint remover is recommended for the oil based paint ~ unlike latex, oil base is not easily cleaned with soap and water.. I believe that most oil based paint calls for mineral spirits as a remover, but it could be something different.. It's been years since I've tackled home improvement projects, and I'm sure there are a zillion new products on the market.... Good luck!
