Birthmom doesn't have a birth certificate

We learned today that the birthmom doesn't have a birth certificate. They aren't sure if she can get one or not. If not, we can't continue with our adoption. If it is possible, they said it will take several months.

Has anyone else gone through this?

We are going through something similar...our birth mom's birth certificate has an error on it so first it had to go before a judge (that took about a month), then it goes back to the PGN for review..Based on what we have experienced, I think (and I'm not an expert by any means) that they will be able to create a birth certificate for her...it is just going to extend your process a bit (maybe a big bit!) more.

We also went through a similar problem.
Our son's birth mothers BC was not legible so they had to make a new one. Well that took about 5 months because she signed her name as a witness to her own birth. So that also had to be fixed.
We went into PGN in Sept 03 and didn't get out until Mar 04.
It was a long journey to Alex!!!
Good luck getting a birth certificate!!!!

Thanks for the replies! How far along in the process can you go before the birth certificate is needed? In our case, since she doesn't have one at all, I'm not sure we can even get DNA... that's of course hoping she can get one.

We found out when we went into the PGN...but I would think that even if she can't get the DNA done at this point that is OK because one way or another the birth certificate must be created (the delay will happen somewhere along the way). I'm so sorry that you are going through this --- I really understand how hard it is.....But it does seem "fixable"....just really really time consuming!!!

Thanks!--that is encouraging. The agency made it sound doubtful that she even could get a birth certificate at this point, so I hope you are right! At least I'm feeling a bit more hopeful before the long weekend!
