Birth Weight?
Awhile back someone provided info about growth charts for Guatemala. We plan to have a pediatrician who specializes in international adoption look over referral info (when and if we get a referral!!!) but I wanted to do a little homework. I know that babies from Guatemala are smaller and lighter then babies born in US but I was wondering if anyone had info about what an average birth weight in Guatemala might be. Thanks.

I don't know what average weight might be but mine was 8 lbs. 8 oz and 21.25 inches long! My agency said this was the biggest they had seen all year. I suspect she was a few weeks overdue as the birthmom is tiny.

Ours was 6.8 at birth and 20 1/2" long. I had prepared my husband for a little peanut, but he was a biggun'!

At birth our daughter was 5 pounds and 17.5 inches long. She just had her 8 month check up and is now 16.5 pounds and 24.5 inches long. She has gained 3 pounds in the 2 months she has been home...she is an eater.

We got the warning to expect a smaller baby too....NOT! He's 8 months and 19 pounds, right at the 50th percentile on the American growth chart.

At 10 days old Ava was 6lbs 4 ozs and 18 in long. Now at 2 months she is 10 lbs 15 ozs!

I don't think there is a typical weight!

We were prepared for a smaller baby too, but our son was exactly 8 lbs when he was born! I don't think there really is an average size, but we were told if our referral was on the smaller size not to be alarmed, it was perfectly normal!

Ours weighed in at 5lbs 6oz and just under 18 inches long. At 4 months he was almost 17 pounds and had grown over 4 inches. The foster mom reported him as a 'very good eater'.

Our agency told us that most referrals are weigh between 5 and 6 1/2 pounds. Our daughter was 6lbs 14oz at birth and was 19 inches long. By the time she came home she was 17lbs and 25 inches.

Our baby girl was 4lbs.6oz.
Our baby girl was only 4 pounds 6 ounces at birth. We received her four month medical update this past weekend and she was only up to 11 pounds 4 ounces. I, too, would love to see a Guatemalan growth chart. I looked at one on the World Health Organization website and it showed that she is below the 3rd percentile for her age/weight. At the same check up, she was 24.5 inches long. The WHO growth chart for height/age says that she is at 50th percentile. We have questioned that with our agency and they are supposed to ask her doctor about it next week. I am wondering if she must be extremely underweight for her height/length to be at 50th percentile.
