Our USCIS office doesn't. I sent one with our first adoption, and they returned it to me requesting a M.O. or Cashiers Check.. I filed in Orlando, FL.. Each office may be different.

I think each office may be different. I believe we sent personal checks to the San Francisco and the Sacramento, CA office for our fees.

Mine accepted a personal check. According to the USCIS FORM I-600A on page 3, last paragraph of #4. states the following; Pay by check or money order in the exact amount. Make check payable to the Department of Homeland Security.
I must admit that when I was writing the check during our infopass appointment I noticed there was a note on the window to make checks payable to ...I don't remember what it said, but I know it was different. I had mine written out before I saw it and the woman said it was fine.

Mine does not. I wrote one out and had it sent back with instructions to send a cashier's check or money order.

Even though the fourth page of the form said they accept them, the Houston office requires a cashiers check or money order - they will not process it with a personal check. Their website is actually a little bit more clear and states that it varies by office. If in doubt, do a cashiers check because they all take those.

I would check the website for your local office-- ours does accept personal checks, but they aren't all run on the same plan despite being run by the feds. There seem to be many differences and one would hate to be held up by something like that!
