Tubes in the Ears

If you get grosed out easily you may not want to read this unless you have a child with tubes in their ear/s.

This past January I had a tube placed in my left ear, I've had cronic ear infections since childhood and the Dr desided to give this a try before surgery. I have to say it has helped out a lot. Not only the pressure off the inner ear but no infections... Well till last week. Last week I got a stomach infection (caused by eating out and someone not washing their hands). This infection caused vomiting. A few hours later something felt funny in my ear. I used a q-tip (I know big no no) to see what was in there. It was some vomit.

Well the stomach infection didn't get better so I went to the Dr finaly. He perscribed an antibiotic for the stomach infection. I told him my ear felt plugged. He looked and I also had an ear infection. He said most likey caused by the vomit. I was shocked by this because the Dr that put the tube in never mentioned anything like that. The Dr said it's not something that happens rarely but not something that always happens.

So morial of the story is if you child has tubes and vomits keep an eye on those ears. I'm not saying not to do the tubes, because I know personally they've helped so much. When this one falls out the Dr is already planing on putting another one in.

and the award goes to....

ok, I think that officially qualifies as the grossest story I have ever heard. But thanks for the tip, my ds has had ear tubes on and off for 2 1/2 years...they are just a part of life in our house I'll be sure to keep an eye on him!

Sorry I was tying to be as less discriptive as possable. A co-worker's daughter has tubes as well and she was shocked as well since she was not told it either. I guess I know the ear infection pain, trying to spare a child that.

Our son just had ear tubes and adenoids removed last month. I knew ears, throat and sinuses were all connected but I never thought about that. Even though it is kinda gross, it is good to know about.

Our son never had ear infections but was having hearing problems and wasn't a good sleeper. He is considerably better since then.

Oh, that IS the grossest ever!

I am wondering if you don't hear about this happening in kids in particular because the tubes (eustation??) between their ears, nose, and throat are slightly different. Aren't they at somewhat a different angle in kids and as you grow they change? Or am I totally off in left field? Any physicians out there this morning?

Your exactly right. They are shorter also. Not a doctor but a nurse.

It is good to know about the vomit thing. I have never heard of it either. Doctors should tell you even if it is rare!

You got it. The eustachian tubes in kids are way smaller and at an angle, so less likely this could happen. Still possible, though, especially with forceful vomiting. Normally, with the eardrum in place, the pressure prevents fluids from the throat entering the ear, but with the tubes in place, acting as a vent, that protective pressure is gone.
Too add to the grossness, the tear ducts are also connected and this same thing can happen.

Mine is actally the same size as what they use in children. I'm a small adult and he thought the adult one woudl be to bid for my ear drum. He showed me the two (he did it right in his office). The kid ones were blue and the adult ones were white.
I got ahold of his nurse today and as soon as I said vomit she asked which pharmacy I go to so she could call the RXs in.

What I was talking about were your eustation tubes that connect your ears, nose, throat, and evidently tear ducts. (Still grossed out about that!) Not the tubes they put in.
