Anyone Else's Baby have asthma??????

Chloe has been home 3 1/2 mos and been to the dr. 9 times and on antibiotics all 9 times. She has had ear infections 4 times, throat infection, and 2 sinus infections. We have had no sleep in 4 days because of her being so sick. I took her back to the dr. this am because her breathing was so labored and she kept choking. They diagnosed her with Asthma. He gave her a breathing treatment and put her on prednisone. She will see an allergist on 9/1 because he says he knows she also has allergies.
Has anyone else's baby stayed sick since being home?
Asthma?
It's amazing that my 10 yr old bio dd also has asthma and stayed sick like this until she started seeing an allergist regularly. The only difference is I sure wish I had Chloe's medical records. Remember we never got the 1st one in the whole 13 1/2 mos we waited on her. Maybe I could have gotten my baby different help sooner, had we known. Now I know why our fm kept telling us not to take her out at night because she was delicate. Makes me mad, I don't know what antibiotics she has been on or what kinds of medical treatments she has had before coming home.
Am I being unreasonable????????????????

Mia had one ear infection after another when she came home, it was clear that she needed tubes. After the tubes she had pneumonia and then several more cases of sinus issues. I've had her in the emergency room more in her short 7 months home with us than my son has been in his 20 years. The last time at the emergency room they said they think she has asthma but it can't be detected for sure until she is over 2. They did however give us an inhaler and it does seem to help when she starts with cold type symptoms.

Oh...I am so sorry this has happened. I would be angry too! It seems like they hid this from you - but maybe they did so because they thought you might not want a baby with allergies??? I don't like to think that way, and that may not be the reason, but I would be a little upset that no one said anything. Maybe they didn't know better either...

I will say a prayer for your little girl...allergies can be miserable. Maybe it will be something that's easily fixed.

Hello....both my two little ones have asthma. Mayla the worst. In one year we came home with pneumonia and have had it 3 more times, RSV. We have a nebulizer at home which both girls use. Hope Chloe feels better. I know what it is like not to get sleep. Nancy

Have you seen an ent yet? If she has had that many infections, she may need to have her adenoids and tonsills out. After ds had this, and ear tubes, he has not had an ear infection, sinus infection, or throat infection....and he had gotten these so often up until these 2 surgeries that he was out of daycare due to illness at least 1/3 of the time he was enrolled.

Giovanni is 3.5 years. He came home at 10 months. Yes he has asthma. Each time I went for a visit I mentioned how he coughed like he was a smoker. Exactly 2 days after being home he was in the ER. His breathing was so bad I actually thought he was going to die right there that night. They told me he had asthma. We control it now. There have been some very scary nights. We go nowhere without the nebulizer. Good luck. Once you get a diagnosis and meds its easier to manage.

Because of the change in environment your daughter's allergies and asthma could be much worse than they were in Guatemala. Plus you need to keep in mind that usually allergies take a while to appear due to the fact that newborns recieve anti-bodies from thier mothers in utero. This is a record year in terms of the severity of allergies across the U.S. so keep your fingers crossed that things will be better next allergy season. Finally I must say you are doing a great job managing the situation. Usually it takes parents and pediatricians much longer to refer to allergists or ENTs

Yep! But, they are calling it 'Reactive Airway disease' which will more than likely go into asthma. My 21 month old had ~10 ear infections and pneumonia twice within a year!!! We have a neb machine to use when she is sick with a cold and her breathing/coughing is constant. She did have tubes put in last month, and she only had one ear infection..... but her hearing is great!!!
Has anyone else's dr. call it Reactive Airway disease??
Hang in there...

I just received a nebulizer for my little one two days ago. During the follow up for his second ear infection in the last 6 weeks, the Dr. noticed him wheezing. She didn't call it asthma because she said he's too young to diagnose. I guess we'll find out...

I was spoiled with my older son. He has had one stomach virus at about age 1.5 and nothing else other than very minor colds.

Asthma

My 15 year bio D had a breathing attack at 36 hours old. They told me it was Infant Lung Distress. At six months old I took her to the doctor because she was wheezing so bad it sounded like she had a whistle stuck in her throat and her lips were purple ! They said they thought she had asthma but they did not usually diagnose it until they were two. At 9 months she had pnuemonia, at 11 months bronchitus and at 12 months they said she had a severe case of asthma ! We have blessed that she has never been hospitalized ! But we have spent many nights in the ER ! We control hers pretty well but we still have many scary times like when they put new carpet in our church and her inhaler was empty ! Smoke of any kind, heat, a cold and stress triggers hers !

Our foster mother told us that our dd hadn't been sick a day in her five + months when we went to pick her up. I believe her, but soon after coming home she had almost a continual runny nose, and coughed at night. I figured she was just getting used to the germs that her brothers were bringing home, but then she ended up in the hospital for a week with RSV. Poor baby girl. Our ped has heard wheezing once (before the RSV) but he's pretty sure that she will eventually be diagnosed with asthma. I was giving her an inhaled steroid, but stopped through the summer. We'll start again as soon as the flu/cold season starts. She's such a little peanut as it is, I hate to do anything to stunt her growth, but after seeing her THAT sick, I'll do anything to keep her healthy. Unfortunately I know many families with children Sara's age (bio) who have asthma, so I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with being from Guatemala, it is just on the rise now. I think it's one of those things that freeks you out at first (who wants to see their child sick?) but as you get to know your child and how he/she reacts to different allergens, colds and medicine, It's not so worrisome anymore.

I don't think its anything to do with being from Guatemala, I was just interested to know how many of our children has it and we had no idea because of having no medical records before coming home.
My bio dd up until last year was on 3 inhalers, 2 allergy medicines, and a nasal spray. She wasn't diagnosed with the asthma until 13 mos old, but we knew something was definitely wrong, she had 15 ear infection her 1st year, not counting all the sinus infections. Don't know why I would think my little Guatemalan princess would be anything different from my other 3. Wishful thinking, right!

Maria came home the end of October 05 and we have experienced the same thing. I've been in and out of the doctors office with colds, coughs, sinus infections, ear infections, bronchitis, rsv and the list goes on. The doctors put her on inhalers and yes we have done the same with continous antibiotics. Unfortunately, Maria gets so sick from taking the medicine she ends up vomiting so I think it's to strong for her.

She's been doing great this summer and I picked her up from school yesterday and her nose was running. As of this morning she's coughing and experiencing the same systems from prior experiences. I started her on the inhalers and have decided to find a good ENT to find out if she does have asthma.

Just know that your not alone and we will get thru these difficult times and do all we can for our children.

Susan
