Anyone's baby Quiche?
Our baby is Quiche and I am wondering if anyone has found much information about the Quiche Indians? I read I, Rigoberta Menchu (realizing it is highly controversial) but cannot find much other info.
Thanks, Lana |

Lana,
Hey, how did you find out that your baby was Quiche? (there's another more proper spelling, I think, but I can't come up with it!) Was there some info on the birth certificate, history of the birth family, etc? What area of the country was the baby born in? I ask this because I was told that my daughter's birthmother, nor any of her family, did not speak Spanish and communication was difficult. They spoke the Quiche language. Does anyone know anything more about this?! I'd be fascinated to learn details... Jen PS...is there a photo of your little one? ![]() |

Our daughter's birthmom also speaks K'iche. She is from Nahuala, Solola and Ava's birth certificate is from Mezatanango...(I don't see anything on it about Kiche though). We got this info from the interview our agency conducted during DNA. I'll try to attach a picture...our babies are so cute!!!!!!!

Hello. On the paperwork we got with the referral information, the birthmother was interviewed and under ethnicity "indigenous" was checked and then "Quiche" was handwritten next to the box. Baby was born in Mazatenango and birthmother is from Nahuala, Solola.
I had a Guatemalan friend of mine look at the names (we have names of both birthmother and birthfather) and she said they were definitely Indian, not Spanish names. That's all I know! Lana Last edited by SisterBear : 08-16-2006 at 01:25 PM. |

If you do a search on the internet of Q'eqchi or K'iche you will find a good bit of information. Our son's family was from Alta Verapaz and he is Q'eqchi Indian. It is my understanding that Q'eqchi are the largest group of the indigenous peopes of Guatemala and descendents of the Maya. My son's birthmother did not speak spanish and required an interpreter in her family court visits etc.
It is also my understanding that the short sirnames sometimes indicate a a child is of Mayan ancestry (i.e. loc, tut, etc). My son is quite small for his age and has somewhat Asian features which I also think are indicative of the region he is from. My understanding is that this group is looked down upon in Guatemala and are in general treated poorly. All of the above is only my understanding and could be wrong. All I know for sure is that my son is amazing and charms everyone he meets. I want him to be so proud of his Mayan ancestry as I am. I hope that helps. Tiersa |

There are so many different spellings for the tribes. I would throw up a thread on the geographical area and any type of spellings to get alot of info on this. Many of these spellings are just people trying to write down what was verbally specified as the tribe.
There are alot of sites on different spellings on the Mayan. Good Luck! My sons paperwork was spelled as Tekche. See what I mean?

Our daughter is from Coban, and had surnames of Pop and Tut. We were already thinking that she was Mayan, based on where she's from and she looks very "indian", but I believe her birthmother spoke Spanish. However, she is listed as "indigenous." I so wish we could find out more about her heritage. Any input is appreciated!!

Fascinating stuff, huh? Keep the info coming....I've got some research to do on this one, myself!
My daughter's birth family originated from the Lake Izabal area, on the eastern coast of Guatemala, up near the country of Belize. See, that's quite a ways from the others mentioned here! And she does look more Mayan/ Indian than Hispanic in her features...she totally captivates everyone who meets her! Jen |
