Due to the terrorist threat on flight from UK to US today, be aware that airport security is extremely tight. The following was issued this morning by the Department of Homeland Security:

Effective this morning, the Secretary of Homeland Security has elevated the Homeland Security Advisory System Threat Condition to Severe, or Red, for all commercial flights from the United Kingdom to the United States, and to High, or Orange, for all other international flights and all domestic commercial aviation. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will be implementing a series of security measures to ensure the security of the traveling public and the Nation's transportation system. TSA is immediately implementing following changes to airport screening procedures:

• NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.
  • Exception: Baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling; prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger’s ticket; and insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines

• Beverages purchased in the sterile area must be consumed before boarding. They will not be permitted onboard the aircraft.
• Passengers traveling from the U.K. to the U.S. will be subject to a more extensive screening process

The heightened security measures will likely cause delays in airport check-in (ticketing, baggage check, security screening). To minimize your inconvenience and ensure you allow adequate time to make your scheduled departure, we recommend you take the following steps:

• Call your scheduled airline to verify your flight status and approximate time required to clear ticketing, baggage and security Inquire as to what you’ll be allowed to carry on your flight (laptop, backpack, purse, etc.). You may be required to check bags you normally carry on.
• Per the rules listed above, pack any checked and carry on bags appropriately before you get to the airport.

Our airport (Atlanta) is requiring parents to take a drink of any pre-made, or ready to use formula if you can believe that. Otherwise they have to dump it out. Yuck!
