I am planning to visit my baby in Sept and depending on the progress of our case I may just stay there and foster the baby. Can this be left open or do I have to make arrangements for fostering with the Agency before I leave? What does it involve?

Usually this does have to be prearranged. Legally the custody of your child is either to the attorney, the foster mom or hogar. Usually legal paperwork is involved in Guatemala to grant us temp. custody in case you get stopped by someone in Guat. or in case you need to seek medical helps, etc....

Also, not all agencies and/or attornies allow this - so it is best to find out before you go!

I know the agency we used does not allow fostering. However, I met other families (with different agencies) that were staying at the Marriott for well over a month. It wasn't considered 'fostering' because they couldn't leave the hotel, but they did get to keep their babies with them.. Costwise, this could be very expensive... We were going to do this with our daughter on the last visit trip, but we ended up getting pink before we arrived. Even so, we arrived on 12/28 and our Embassy appointment wasn't until Friday, 1/6 because of the holidays. We then had to stay until 1/10 to pick up the visa. So, our hotel bill was quite large.
