Does anyone know what it cost to just send a letter and maybe a few pictures to someone in Guatemala?

It was CHEAP!
I sent a card with a little letter and a couple of photos inside last month. It was only about $1.60. However, the postmaster didn't have a clue, if the address looked "OK" or any information at all about mailing to Guatemala. I haven't reveived any response, so not sure if it made it to the foster family. The foster father wrote the address on a napkin, and his writing was a bit difficult to read. I say, try it. Just make sure you have doubles of your photos so if needed, you can make reprints. Good luck!

I have sent packets of pictures and a letter a few times. I use a 6 x 9 manila envelope with a piece of cardboard to keep it flat. It is about $12 to send it registered mail with a return receipt. The package always arrives within two weeks, but I usually don't get the return postcard back for another 4 weeks after that.
I use the post office where my Mom lives because there is a state university there and the post office is used to dealing with international mail. We live in a city of over 100,000 people but our post office has just no clue when it comes to sending anything internationally.

It's 84 cents for a plain old letter. If you have a heavier-than-an-ounce letter or envelope with a photo or 2, plan on double that. You must go to the counter and get the articles sent, though, you can't send them with USA regular stamps. It's air mail, of course.

Here is a link to the U.S. Postal Service, showing the International Rate for Airmail. It indicates delivery in 4-10 days. The times that we have sent letters to our son's foster mother, it has been closer to 2 weeks than 1.
