There is a BC when the child is born. Then, when your adoption is finalized in Guatemala, you receive a BC with the child's original first and middle names, and your last name. Finally, if/when you re-adopt, you receive a BC from your state, and at that time you can change the name.

They are given a birth certificate from the town they were born with their given first and middle name and your last name. We haven't done a re-adoption just yet so legally and for all medical purposes our daughter still goes by her given name. Once we re-adopt her we'll be able to change her name for all that stuff. But when you are adding your child to your insurance make sure you put his/her given name and not the name you will use.

Hope that helps!

So, when I add her to our medical insurance then I give them her given name with our last name which will be on her birth certificate, and then when I re-adopt then I can change her name then...Once I do that do you just call medical insurance company and tell them you changed her name?? Also, do you have to wait on the name change after re-adoption to get her Social Security card?? Just planning ahead..thanks for all the helpful information...don't know what I would do without you ladies..

A lot depends on what your medical insurance requires you to provide. For ours we had to fax them our kids' birth certificates (and maybe the decree?) to get them added, but they didn't require anything for their name changes.

I got our kids' social security numbers right away because we needed them for insurance and taxes, and then went back and had their names changed later. But you can wait (if you don't need the number for anything)until after the name change is complete and save yourself a trip.
