stroller in antigua?

We're going to be in Antigua for a week with our toddler adoptee and our 8yo. I'm wondering about what types of strollers will work on those cobblestone streets when you've got a toddler. I'm sure our umbrella wouldn't do well. Anyone use anything else besides a jogging stroller? I don't want to buy one of those. Thanks! LSMOM

I don't know of any stroller that would work, not only are the streets cobblestone but the sidewalks are really uneven and not very wide. When your in the town square itself it's the sidewalks are better but getting there might be more of an issue. We visited twice (once with our 2 1/2 year old) and stayed in Antigua both times, we carried an umbrella stroller but only used it at the hotel and the airport.

Impossible to use in Antigua - use a sling.

Wink

I agree with the above comments. We were just there
a couple of weeks ago and we were warned about not bringing a stroller. We saw many moms there fostering and they all had slings. Just make sure that you get a really good sling that has wide shoulder straps and good back support.

I agree

In Antigua, a stroller is virtually useless. I would suggest a sling, baby bjorn or a backpack (if your child is old enough to sit up).

The only time we used our umbrella stroller was in lieu of a high chair at one of the restaurants there. We carried it there.

Yesterday was my son's first birthday and I was just reviewing pictures from our visit & pickup trips from Oct05 and Dec05. What fabulous memories!

You will have a fantastic time there. Take lots of pictures!!

Happy Travelling,
Kristine

I saw a few people with strollers, but they were really struggling.. The cobblestone streets and sidewalks are uneven and very rough.

I don't know how little your toddler is, but could you use some kind of carrier? Like an ergo carrier?

I used the Baby Bjorn while in Antigua... as the other poster said, the sidewalks are very narrow and uneven. You end up crossing coblestone streets to walk down some so I think a stroller would be very difficult to manage.

Enjoy Antigua... I loved all the secret gardens and if you find a bread bakery ( try it ). Awesome bread hot from the oven.

If you can manage it, use a backpack type carrier (Kelty makes a good one). We used ours in Antigue, and use it all the time now. Max is about 27 lbs now, and he is still able to carry around. They lov ebeing up so high too, they can see everything.

stroller

I fostered our daughter back in 2004 and lived in Antigua for 7 weeks and I used the running stroller w/big wheels, I was told before I went that regular and umbrella strollers would not work. I am glad I had that one with me. Have a great trip, it is so pretty there and you get to see alot of the culture.

You can use a jogging stroller..but being so large they are hard to get on the planes I would think..you can buy one there in Guat..

My suggestion would be a Baby Ergo Carrier..
goes from infant to 40 lbs..can do front, back and hip carry...

I used a Maya Wrap in Antigua..nice because it had a "tail" to shield her head from the hot sun..

I did have a cheap stroller there as well..but every time I got off the sidewalks onto the stone street I had to lift up her and the stoller and carry her across the street..
