Do foster moms use pacifiers?

I was wondering if anyone knew if the foster moms give the babies pacifiers.

Mine does not. From what I hear, it is far less common there than it is here. There is a word for it and all, if you want I can look it up on my list, but even she told me most of them do not use them.

It's pretty common NOT to use pacifiers in Guatemala. I asked our foster mother if we could give
Alie one and she gave me an emphatic NO.

The bottle is used as a substitute for a pacifier, it seems. Every time a baby cries, everyone says 'oh, he is hungry' and gives the baby a bottle.

Our foster mom did not, though several of the babies on our pick up trip had been started by their foster moms.

My foster mother did. I sent some in the ziploc I sent down, but the one he came with on my visit trip was a different one. So, they do sell them and use them.

Not ours! I bought one of each color to coordinate with her clothing and the foster mom told me:" I don't use that! no, no"

SO I brought them back home and have them in a drawer.

Our foster mom was shocked when she saw me use one with our little guy (at 6 weeks). She said that she doesn't use one because she didn't want to miss noticing if he was hungry! I agree, I think a full bottle is often used in place of a pacifier. Oh well....

btw...I think a pacifier is a "pepe" in Guate.

The hogar we used does not use them. All three of my kids did not use them. It's funny, they all seemed to substitute something for a pacifier though. My two boys have their blankies that they suck on the ends of and my daughter has, well, her thumb. Luckily, at 1.5 years old, she is weaning herself and very rarely sucks her thumb now.

I have noticed that very few foster moms or hogars use them.

Ours did not, and for me I had planned on using one but I am glad now because it will be one less thing to break.

Mine does. I sent one down just in case. It actually does reduce SIDS and one of the surgeons at my hospital just had his baby die of SIDS, so now I am glad she took to it. It is very soothing to babies the first months or so. But it is not common for them to use them, I have heard.

Our foster mom did not, but we started our son using them on our first visit trip. She was shocked to see it in his mouth when she came to pick him up, and he seemed to enjoy it so I left several. On our second visit, she left a few pacifiers to use, and I could tell (by the way it soothes him) that she has started to use them!

I have a question about this. From what I've read it seems that pretty much everyone views the adoptive move AS the adoptive mom/parents, I should say, even things may not be finalized. How much say do you actually have after that referral?

Say, for example, you go to visit your baby at 6 wks and like leeanng you use a pacifier and your baby seems to really like it. The FM doesn't agree with them, though. Obviously you aren't there to make sure they do use it, but how much "pull" do you actually have?

I can't think of anything besides the pacifier, except weird ones ... like, what if you only wanted your baby to wear one brand of onesies ... can you send over enough and expect them to follow your wishes???

Weird question, I know, but it made me wonder.

Amy
