Struck by lightning (O/T)

My oldest son and I barely missed getting struck today. It wasn't even raining outside though I saw lightning in the distance and heard remote thunder).

Anyway, I was on my laptop next to the wall where it was plugged in, my 9 yo son was a few steps behind the couch where I was sitting--walking over to ask me something! All the sudden the most horrific sound (like a gunshot in my ears), a flash of light, then smoking and a burnt smell. It struck the wall just inches between my 9 yo son and me!!! The wall is all cracked, the laptop fried, and the baseboard right there is charred and split!

Talk about scary. My son felt burning on his leg and face, and me on the right side of my face (felt like a sparkler being held by my cheek). No signs of burns though.

So now, I guess we contact the homeowners' insurance co. The wall higher up is cracked and split, slight signs of buckling in a couple places. 2nd phone line doesn't work now, not sure how wiring was affected. And my prized laptop useless...

But, I'm just glad I we lived to tell about it!!! I guess we need lightening rods on our house, our garage was struck this spring also (we are in AZ White Mountains).

Just thought I'd share this, not everyday this happens.

Wo! That's too close for comfort!
I know what that sounds like! It's REALLY loud!
Our house was hit years ago and it was scary!!
The lightning and the sound happen at the same time...
You're lucky you weren't hit!

That is crazy. last night on our news in FL there was a house hit that went threw the roof. They said it doesnt look that bad but the fire department said it is condemed because the rafters in the roof arnt safe now. so the stucture isnt sound. So I hope you called someone to look at it. I will pray that everything is ok. Kim

WOW!!! Oh my gosh, that's so scary!!! You'd think the one place you'd be safe is in the house!

I am so thankful you and your son are ok. I hope the insurance meeting goes well!

I am still reeling from it, I mean what are the odds? And our house is huge, 3 levels, and it just happens to strike right there at that time? I can't help but joke that "God missed". )

Anyway, dh called the drywall guy for starters and he's looking around right now. We found a portion on the 3rd level ceiling with damage I hadn't noticed earlier, on the opposite side of the stairs.

Dang, I hope the damage isn't too bad, but they'll have to go in and do an assessment before we'll really know.

Kim, yes, you'd think you'd be safe in your house. We live in a tall house on a hill though, I'm kinda feeling like a target right now!

WOWOW!!! I'm SO happy that you all are safe and sound!!! WHEW! I was in a parked vehicle that was struck when I was a child. It was so powerful it lifted the back of the car up and turned it 90 degrees, but we were safe of course. It was one of the scariest and UNFORGETABLE things that has ever happened to me. I think experiencing the power of something like that is terrifying!!!!!!!! Glad you all are ok!!!
