Changing my son's name? How do I do it??
Hi,
I know this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find the threads. My son came home on a IR3 visa. I have received his COC. I live in FL and did not want readopt. At least not at this point. I am not sure what to do first. File for the SS # or do I wait until the name change is done? Thanks

I am in the midst of this right now..in Maryland. I am doing the name change first (thru the family court section of our circuit court) so that I don't have to do anything twice (before and after the name change). After that is done, I will do SSN, get a certificate of foreign birth from our state and then get him a passport.

We just did the name change. We filed a request with the circuit court and had a court date the next week. It was very quick and easy. Afterwards, we applied for the recognition of foreign adoption with our state and just received it this week. Now, I plan to apply for a birth certificate in our state and a ss card.

In our state, we apply for recognition of a foreign birth and do the name change at the same time and get the new BC at the same time.
