Sensory issues...

I was curious to see if any of you had children with sensory issues, and if so, what?

My daughter may have some sensory issues per a physical therapist, and she is going to be having a formal evaulation from a speech/occupational therapist.

I was just wondering if any of you had experience with this?

Thanks!

Cheri

Sensory issues

Yes I have a son that was born premie. He is 10 now. We have had many sensory issues here. Mainly tactile but we did OT and PT. He still has some issues but with time and work they have gotten a little better. Buy the book The Out of Sync Child. It is a great help. Sensory plays a big part in their behavior so dont think they are always doing things to be naughty sometimes its just the way they deal with it.
You can PM me if you would like.

My son who is 4 1/2 has some sensory issues and some speech issues. He attends a speech preschool through the school district in our area and they provide OT services as well. We have been very pleased with his progress. I thought the book The Out of Sync Child was great too. Please feel free to PM me.

Take care, Jo Ann

Hi
Both my kids have some sensory issues. Basically from what I have learned they are overly sensitive to different tactile stimulations. Our son has to wear sun glasses to the dentist and even the flourescent lights at school bother him. He had to have all the tags cut out of his shirts.

Our daughter never had sensory issues till her heavy metal toxicity occured. Now, if even 1 drop of water gets on her face she freaks out. Bath time is a nightmare. I have had to start co-bathing with her again, just to get her in the tub.

She also never had a problem wearing pajama's at night..now she will scream, panic and attempt to tear them off..she has to sleep in only a diaper, no matter how cold it is. I used to have my arm around her when we slept, after her incident then she would push me away and didn't want anyone or anything touching her. She can't stand to have a sheet or blanket covering her at night..she will cry and kick it off. t

If there is a motorcycle going or any other loud noise she screams and puts her hands over her ears.

I think the fact she pushes my arm away and the water on the face thing is what upsets me the most..I had really wanted her in swim lessons..we had done the mommy and me swim class before her incident and she did fine...but now I wouldn't bother with it..

I have a 9yo who had severe sensory issues (she is from Romania) and after two very long years, she has successfully graduated from therapy. She now knows on her own what she can and can't handle, birthday parties are out and she is ok with that, and knows how to self regulate. She uses a great program called How Does Your Engine Run. Good luck. Nancy

Our son, Joey, appears to have some sensory issues. He is hyposensitive and also seems to have some attachment issues. We are working with a physical therapist and an occupational therapist and he is making great strides. Feel free to pm me if you want.

Also, don't let the early intervention (or wherever you are getting your evaluations done) people freak you out too much. When Joey was first diagnosed I got really nervous and thought everything I did was wrong, and everything he did was rooted in some issue or another.

I quit trusting my instincts and my ability to mother. Joey would look away from me and I'd just want to cry. After a few months I realized that I had the power to parent, and that the OT and PT's were there to give me good advice that I could incorporate into our lives as suited all of us best.

We are all doing much better now. We are not issue free, but we are not afraid to reach out and love eachother either. I hope I'm making sense here!

Best of luck,

Isabela, my 5 1/2 year old, has speech issues and sensory issues relating to propioception (where your body is in space). She is starting speech and we have already seen some improvement there. Her proprioception issues did not quite merit therapy but we do stuff they reccomended at home and we have seen some improvement. She still hate any rides (including the merry-go-round) and doesn't like swimming. But we are slowly owrking on all that.

keep pushing for what you think you child needs it took me three years to finally get the schools to qualify Isabela for speech but we finally got somewhere. Yeah!!!
