Adoption in the media

Well, it isn't mentioned, but I though it was interesting that in the same story, it was referred to in two different ways:

Henri Behar, who moderates Cannes’ news conferences, read a message from Pitt, who has been in Namibia with his “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-star, Angelina Jolie, awaiting the birth of the couple’s first child.

“With the imminent arrival of the newest addition to our family, I am unable to join Alejandro, Cate, Gael and the rest of the cast and crew in introducing” his new film, “Babel,” the 42-year-old actor said in the message.

So, as I read, I'm first thinking, what do you mean their first child, they have TWO already???

But Pitt himself used the phrase 'newest addition to our family" which shows he gets it.

I read the same article but what was actually said later was correct!! It was explained that Jolie's kids have legally taken on Pitts last name. I don't actually think that the adoption has been final yet. I could be wrong but the way this read, I didn't have any problems with. (For a change)

Normally, I hate it when a story breaks it down in all the wrong ways!

Speaking of "Adoption in the media," has anyone noticed the K-Mart commercial where the dad walks into the kitchen and announces to his two daughters "I can fit into my old shorts"? Since one of the girls is decidely Asian, and Dad and the other girl are decidely not- I interpreted it to represent an IA family. My husband says I'm reading into things to much. . .

No way, I love those commercials too. A few years back there was an insurance commercial that fetaured an IA family. I've seen other too I just can't remember which ones. There should be more though.

I agree that there should be more. Since my family was always just like the "typical" (non-colored), upper-middle class, suburban folk shown in every advertisement growing up- I never paid much attention to portrayals. Since I realized that my daughter might not see too many families like ours in the media- I've been on the lookout for any representations that even hint at IA, biracial, or blended families. There do seem to be more- but maybe I'm just noticing it more. Parents magazine often has nice pictures (the editor's daughter is adopted from China).
