How did you add your child to your health insurance?

Hi!

We just accepted the referral of a beautiful baby girl, born on April 30. We were told to add her to our health insurance. My husband brought home the add / change/ delete form, but I'm confused with a few things. What do we put down for her last name? Her current one, or our last name? Also, I know we can't put social security number or address. I'm guessing that we leave those blank.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

K.D.

We were not able to add our son to our insurance until he was offically placed in our arms. They required the final decree and the bc with our names on it.

I believe it is the norm that the child cannot be added until you are out of PGN and the child is legally yours. Right now, the child is not legally your child yet.

I would ask not only your agency about this, but your insurance company.

HTH,

When I spoke with our rep at Blue Cross they said that we add him at the end of the process. So we are going to give them another call when we get pink. I would call and ask your rep.

I was told by my insurance company I couldn't add my son until I went down to pick him up and bring him home. I think the day of the pink appt at the Embassy is a commonly used day.

We needed the copy of the protocolo (and translation) to add our son. I was concerned about the 30 day notification, since the protocolo was signed way before we had it in our hands with a translation....but I didn't need to be worried. Most employers and insurance companies probably don't know much about international adoptions...you could probably explain the actual date as the date of the protocolo, embassy appointment or home. We actually made the effective date the 1st of the month in between the protocolo and the embassy appointment...and it didn't match any of the paperwork!

I don't know about adding the babe prior to coming home-- our agency said nothing of the sort (would think there would be "issues" at least prior to PGN finalization). We added her as a birth child after she came home. We ended up using DH's insurance for her giving us a 30 day window, but had a 90 day window with mine. Perhaps give your insurance a call? Not sure how they'd bill for a child who's not officially yours in another country. Does your fee not cover medical visits?

We were not able to add our dd until she was officially our child. After we came home, my dh called his HR office. They asked him to fax the final decree and her BC. They put her on immediately upon receiving it.

My agency told me to add my son right away which i did. Then i was paying $90 more a month (individual to family plan). I was then told that my insur. would not cover anything as he is not legally mine yet and not in the us yet. So after 4 months i cancelled the insurance and am getting a refund. I will re add him once he gets here.
