Are there currently any single women on this board pursuing an adoption thru Guatemala?

Thank you

Appreciate your responses. Congratulations! I notice each of you were referred a son. Was that by choice? Could you of asked for a girl if desired? Would the wait of been different?

I have a son via domestic adoption. Sadly when we adopted him I was married. My husband of 13 yrs died suddenly. We were planning a 2nd adoption (international). I find my dream of a 2nd child still is in my heart.

What made you choose Guatemala? Did you consider other countries?

Thank you for your feedback.

I was told I couldn't choose gender since I had no other children. I think I would have chosen a girl if I could, but I'm thrilled with a boy and wouldn't change now if I could. It feels right. Sometimes you have to let fate take it's course.

I chose Guatemala for several reasons. The short stay was a definate consideration. Also the foster care system, rather than orphanages, the medical care and the young age of the child when coming home were all factors.

I did not specify boy or girl knowing I would probably get a boy as the wait for a baby girl is longer.

Guatemala seemed to be the best fit for me because I had an opportunity to get a young baby (avg 6-8mos old) as opposed to a toddler. Some other countries restrict against single parent adoptions.

Good luck to youl

Whenever I start the process (I'm thinking maybe in a year), I'll be adopting as a single parent. It will be my first (but certainly I hope not last!) child.

I most likely will request a son... I'm not sure why, it's just one of those things that just seem right.

I chose Guatemala because of their openness toward single women adopting!

Another single mom-to-be here - I requested a girl - and was lucky that the wait was only 3 weeks - my agency told me it would be at least 2 months. I'm heading down for my first visit Memorial Day weekend - my sister and niece are coming with me - I can't wait!!!

From what I've seen, there are lots of single women adopting from Guat - probably because, as someone else said, they are open to singles adopting - and because you can bring the children home at a young age - and because of the foster care system. Lots of positives about Guat.

I'm also single and adopting. I have a 10 yr old bio son, so requested a girl. I always wanted more than one child. While my son is the world to me, the thought of an only child just seemed so lonely. With no potential husband on the horizon and time ticking, I decided to pursue my dream of having another child, this time by adopting. I originally looked into China, knowing I wanted a girl & figuring that would be a logical place to adopt from. Their wait is so long for singles, that my agency suggested Guatemala. I'm so glad they did.

If you've been following the boards, I was the one who received a referral last week and asked about low birth weight. I'm still awaiting blood work results & the doctor's medical report to forward to an IA doc before making a decision. The wait for the info is making me crazy. I find myself already getting attached to the little peanut!

My dossier is currently in DC at the Guat embassy and should be ready to forward to Guat around the end of the month.
