Steps once you are home!!!

I got the COC yesterday in the mail.....

What are the next steps. I have also seen people posting about getting their original docs back. Are these docs needed and what exactly are the docs?

Thanks

You can file form G884 to request the sealed packet of papers you turned in when you entered the country with your child. You should get origionals of the adoption documents and hopefully some pictures. I just filed my kids' forms last week so I can't speak from experience yet, and it seems to vary somewhat as to what people receive.

Other things . . .

Social Security number
Readoption/legal name change if desired
State birth certificate

I was also wondering what to do after receiving the COC. We still have to change our baby's first and middle name, so I'm not sure if I should take care of that before requesting the documents, or what.

Wow! Ouch! Yes, mine are.

havensd - My understanding is that it takes a while for the packet to get to where it is filed. Some even say you should wait a year to file the G884, though many have filed it much sooner with no problem.

Just my opinion, but personally I would go ahead and get the name change done and/or readopt, as well as a state birth certificate, and a social security number if you haven't already, then file the G884 and request the amended CofC with your child's new name once you have the more crucial things done.

After our re-adoption to do the name change, we waited til we got the Bc in the mail and now are off to do the social security number... We filed the G-884 form around 2 weeks ago(procrastination,I know...) and then when we have the money, will apply for the new COC...once we get that, that will be it unless we decide to go out of the country..then will get the new passport...

Thanks for your help. We are currently working with an attorney to get the name change and a new BC taken care of. Once we have the new Texas BC, the social security number, etc. then I guess I'll worry about filing the G884 form and filing for a new COC. Thanks again for your help.
