Adopting without Agency

Has anyone adopted from Guatemala without the use of an agency? We have a connection with an experienced Guatemalan Attorney that has offered to bypass an agency. We are in Maryland. The homestudy was completed through an agency, but we are not obligated to use the agency. Yes we are familar with the risks of working directly with the Guatemalan Attorney.

We adopted independently through a wonderful attorney and had a great experience. It was nice to have the direct contact with him anytime I needed him.... thru email, fax, or phone. We developed a wonderful friendship and have stayed close since Luke came home over a year ago. I think if you find an attorney with impeccable references, and check him out thoroughly, then you can have a smooth process. The attorney we used does not usually do independent adoptions for those of us in the States, but told me he made an exception in our case, for which I will always be eternally grateful.

Good luck and I hope it works for you, as well as it did for us!

Judy

We are working on our second adoption now. The first was done with an agency (awful, awful, awful) so because of that, we are so turned off by them we're trying it on our own.

I'm sorry I can't help much, because we're still waiting on our 171H before we can get a referral. Good luck with yours!

Shannon
