Call your selected ped and tell them your situation and ask what they prefer. But based on my ped, They will probably prefer you call when you are home and can confirm you will be at the apptmt. The ped will want an apptmt longer then just a 6 mo check up and if you have any medicals, you should probably drop them off (translated if you can) prior to your visit and bring proof of the immunizations. Be prepared for the question as to doing titers or just revaccinating. Also, if it is a boy, this is the time to discuss any issues/questions re: circumcision. Write down your questions before hand - th dr is used to it and you will feel better being prepared. Also, dress you child in clothing easy to take off and put on (don't choose the adorable but difficult outfit) b/c you will need to strip the baby and redress the baby. Bring one more diaper then you need. Also, make sure you go to the well waiting room if there is one
WIth formula - I used powder for both my children. My ds, from Guat., was already on powder. It is more economical, more convenient to travel with and in a pince you can always use liquid if that is the only thing available. The babies i know generally will not go from liquid to powder because the liquid is sweeter and thicker. Its similar to going from formula to water (not a big hit with the kids). Also, at 5-6 mos, the baby most likely is eating cereal and possible baby food be prepared for that Good luck and congratulations

Probably more than you asked for...
I set up an "interview" appointment before we left for pick-up. They did not charge me (the doctor will make it up big-time).
This is a good time to ask him/her for dosages of OTC meds based on your child's age and weight. It's nice to be prepared when you're in Guatemala and the baby has a runny nose or fever. Specifically ask about Tylenol (fever), Motrin (teething), Diametap (runny nose), and Benedryl (allergic reaction). Perhaps the doctor will also give you a prescription for Zithromax (sp?) which is an antibiotic you can pack in powder form and mix in Guatemala if you need it. Also ask him/her to recommend a feeding & nap schedule, brand of formula, and number of oz of formula. Then shortly after we were home, we took the kids to the pediatrician for an intial exam, titers, flu shots, and a few hundred questions.

I'd check with the pedi to find out when to make the apt. We made ours when we had a travel date and knew, for near certain, when we would be returning.
As for the formula-- powder is much cheaper and more convenient. Have fun!!

Everyone has their own opinion on formula, but you will need to find out what works best for you. When I was working full time with a newborn and 2 other children, sometimes the liquid was much more convenient. I liked it b/c it is not as messy and mixes well(fyi...if you get ants easily, be careful with the powdered formula...they LOVE it....) Sometimes when the baby was sick, or would wake up for an unexpected feeding and I had not prepared enough bottles, having a can of ready-to-feed formula was a lifesaver! Whatever brand you choose, be sure to register online with them. You will get GREAT coupons for your brand of choice for several months and some free samples. (The same goes for you choice brand of diapers).
