Villa Antigua
Has anyone stayed at Villa Antigua while in Guatemala? I have 2 family members who own time shares and both include Villa Antigua in their listings of participating resorts. Both family members have offered to give us their week so that we could stay there for our visit trip as well as our pickup. I am just a little skeptical since I don't know anyone who has been there.
Anyone know anything about the place?? TIA

We are also going to be staying there based on a family member donating timeshare to us. We'll be there the last week of June.
The website looks nice! It's just the name of the hotel with .com |

It's rather large and not typical for Antigua as in not the colonial style building, etc. It is more current. It also might be a bit further from the center of things. Theydo have a website you can check out. Please be sure that your agency will allow you to stay there during your visit as our required we stay in Guatemala City.
Love, Shelly

This hotel (Villa Antigua) used to the the Radisson in Antigua. We have had meals in thier restaurant and have been at the hotel several times. I know of several families that have stayed there and they were quite pleased. The meals we had were excellent. If we didn't have a place to stay in Antigua, we would have stayed there.
Also, this hotel is very close to town and right around the corner from the Artisans Market. Hope this helps!!

Thanks for the responses! Assuming my agency allows it, we may just stay there since it sounds like a few of you think it's a nice place.

We stayed there 2x's in 2001. We loved the staff, the hotel, and the service. Their suites are wonderful. However...there was an outbreak of scabies in 2001. Our daughter had it, we had it, and then the hogar where our children were staying got it (not from us -- it was the recommended hotel to stay at by the hogar.) So....on our 2nd trip, we brought a few cans of RID spray. The minute we got into our hotel room, we took off the comforter and put it into the closet. We then sprayed everything that we or the babies would be on -- the couch cushions, chairs, blankets on the bed, bed, cribs, floor, etc. We also brought our own crib sheets for the babies and lots of extra blankets for tummy time on the floor and bed. We had no problems with scabies on our second trip.
However, on our 2nd trip, I did get something that left me in the bathroom for a good 24 hours! Thanks God it hit after our embassy appt, but before we were to travel. We built in a free day to go out and about (and shopping!) but never made it. Thank God for my husband who got a crash course in caring for 2 babies at once. We never ate outside of the restaurant, so I know it was from Villa Antigua. The only thing that was suspect was a chicken pasta thing I ate for lunch. I only ate a few bites because I thought the chicken tasted funny. We did eat their fresh fruits and veggies both time with no problems (my husband didn't have any issues either time and usually he's the one with the sensitive stomach.) So -- I'd stay away from the meat and stick with a beans, rice, tortilla diet. With all that being said, we really did LOVE the Villa Antigua and realize that both these issues could happen in any hotel around the world and in the US. They also have the best coffee in their restaurant. We were able to get a rate that included all three meals and unlimited bottled water in a gallon dispenser in our room. Good luck and enjoy Antigua! LauraP mom to Joe-5, Megan-5, and Rosa-1 -- all born in Guatemala

We stayed there in Oct 2005 and it was nice. We had previously stayed at he Hotel Antigua and loved it but it was booked up for our Oct trips so we reserved the Villa Antigua. It has several tennis courts and 3 pools, I do think that they sell memberships or rent out the facility because several days of our stay the pool areas were very crowded with people wearing wristbands.
The main reason we chose this hotel was we were taking our 2 1/2 year old and wanted a pool and a hotel with a restaurant so we didn't have to go out for meal (a lot of places in Antigua are B&B's). The have a nice play area for kids (swings, slides etc.). My only real complaint was that we don't speak Spanish and on several occasions there was no one in the restaurant who could speak English. At other hotels we have stayed at they had at least on person on staff in the restaurant who could speak English but that wasn't the case at the Villa Antigua. Funny story - I ordered a hot dog for my daughter, it came covered in mayo and guacamole, not what a 2 1/2 year old from Maryland is use to. Oh and I did a a problem with ants in the bathroom.

We just returned from our 2nd visit. We stayed at Villa Antigua and everything was great. We did come home sick. However, we ate at the hotel and many other places when we were there. We brought our two children who are 16 and 11. They both enjoyed the resort and the heated pool as well.
