Carseats in Guatemala?
When I was visiting Guatemala a few years ago, I was hard pressed to find any vehicle (car, taxi, anything) that had working seatbelts. Forget about attaching a car seat! Have things changed in the last couple of years? Is there any point in bringing a car seat if you can't secure it? If not, what do you do?

That's something I was wondering about too... do you have to have a car seat for the plane trip? Or do they just let you hold the baby? I've seen an estimate for a 'lap ticket' in some of my material... And what about strollers... Did anyone take their stroller w/them to Guat.?? I know I'm WAY ahead of myself (haven't even decided on an agency yet) but can't help but think of these things!
THANKS!

I was told by the cab driver that they just don't use them. I cringed every time the foster mom left the hotel w/ Arely. On the second trip, she made it a point to tell me that they are very careful in the vehicle w/ the baby- I wonder what the accident and fatality rate in GC is compared to similar cities in this country. They do drive crazy over there...

Shonda, I don't think you need car seat for the plane ride home, you can purchase a lap ticket. Also, a stroller is benficial to have. We rented one at the hotel during our visits. They came in handy for having someplace to put the baby while we ate. Otherwise, we didn't use it b/c we held her the whole time. If you have a newborn or small infant, you can opt to use a baby snugli instead of a stroller. Lots of ppl choose to do that. Up to you- you can check the stroller w/ your luggage. Good luck.

We went back to visit Guatemala in November when our daughter was three years old. We traveled the country by car a lot that whole week, and while we did not have a car seat, we never felt for our daughter's safety. That said, when she was younger and we were on our pickup trip, it did make me a little nervous on the car ride to the airport---but I think that was mostly because we're so conditioned to NEVER have an infant out of a car seat. I personally don't think the driving is any worse in Guatemala than in big US cities. When in Rome, do as the Romans do!
As for the stroller, we took one with us on visit #1 and left it with the foster mom. We didn't bring one on the pickup trip because we decided it would be too much of a hassle when trying to juggle all our other bags. Tina
