Did anyone in KY or TN send in an application? I just cant seem to get people interested in doing this so I wanted to find out if there were any forum friends that signed up so we could get a cluster in KY.

I called this organization Thursday. I told him my family was interested in hosting... I live in Florida and they don't have a "group" in florida but would consider it for next summer. Any Florida families interested in hosting a young teen for a couple months? Go to their website. Easy to find if you search for Guatemalan student support group.

All I can say about this group is to be very careful! The group has very little money and tends to look for families WITH money. We were given a boy (16) starting his freshman year that was extremely troubled and after 2 weeks of strange behavior, etc., the director began hitting us up for money for his extended family of 45 in Guatemala as a way to improve his behavior. Another week went by, his behavior became even more erratic and we asked that he be picked up for a full psychological evaluation (we were his 2nd host family). The director called us and asked that we pay for the psych exam if it came back normal--which it did not. He went on to yet another school in NC. The boy was extremely troubled and it was obvious to all involved that he had not been screened at all. From the beginning (after we signed on) they hinted that there might not be enough money for the line items promised by the program. There is another girl that I am familiar with and the same thing is happening with that family re: bills. She is a much better candidate but if these people are so poor and illiterate how do they have access to cell phones and email? We were literally barraged by requests for money and gifts from the family members in Guatemala. Be wise, Beware, and be very well informed. I was hoping they would be shut down last falll..

Of course we need to do our research when doing any Student Hosting that includes opening our homes to anybody. But It seems InformedAdult just joined A.com today and this is their first post. So I'd love to hear a bit more about you and your background as well, when we include your comment as part of our research. When did you first hear of this group and why did you initially get involved in hosting?
