A couple weeks ago there was a post about getting a passport for your child (who was born in Guatemala). Well, I posted that we applied for our DD's passport and only needed her BC and SS#. I just got a letter in the mail today saying they need the original copy of her COC. This makes me so mad because no one at the passport office told us that we needed this. I have the COC and could have brought it with the day we applied but I was never told I needed it. Also, I hate giving an original copy of anything. Just another hurdle to jump!

I was surprised when I read your original post, because neither of the documents you provided proved Citizenship. Sorry they didn't tell you the right way the first time.

i did it through the mail, sent my originals to a pasport and visa agency, they walked the docs to the passport agency, and mailed me back everything intact,
i also renewed my paspor too!

This happened to us too! We sent in the original COC and had to also send in the final adoption docs from Guatemala because we did a name change but did not get an amended COC. I too was nervous about sending out the original COC but we got it all back with the passport within a few days (we paid extra to expidite processing).

Thanks. I'm glad to hear that others of you got all your documents back. I guess I'll send out the CoC Monday.

Yes, i put the original certificate in the envelope that they sent with the letter that they sent and a note. I received the passport and all the documents back in two weeks.

Hmmm... our local passport office told us we would only need the bc and ss# too.... Thanks for the heads up! I'll be sure to take the CoC with us also...

Just an FYI, they didn't take our COC...and we have the passport. You can also use a certified copy of your readoption papers if you did that. That shows citizenship. I was much happier to let that out of my site then the COC.
