How did you tell your child about plans to adopt?

We are trying to figure out the best way tell our 5-year-old daughter (bio) that we are planning to adopt. She has always wanted a sibling, so I know she will be happy about it, but I'm not sure how to explain the adoption process in a way that she will understand. I would appreciate any feedback on how you explained the adoption to your child. I was thinking of telling her that there are some babies that do not have a mommy & daddy and we are going to bring one home to join our family.

Our six year old is now going through the process the second time! She gets on the video recorder and tells the new baby to be what we are doing to welcome them home, what the names we like are, what she will do with him/her. It seems to help to have her talk about it. She loves the process and can't wait to fly to Guatemala!!

I have 2 wonderful children and have been trying for #3 for 2 yrs now. My daughter who is 4 now has been asking for a baby forever. Well we had to explain that Mommy had to go to the dr to be sure Mommies belly was healthy for God to put a baby in to grow when it was clear we were having difficulties.( I homeschool so my kids are always with me so with all the dr appts it was pretty obvious something was up)
Well when God put adoption in front of us we kept it quiet for a while until right before the Hs appt. My son overheard my dh and I talking and we just explained to them both that this was Gods plan to expand our family. God may not put a baby in Mommies tummy but he was putting this baby in our hearts and his plan was for us to adopt the baby from Guatemala. We simply explained that this baby was supposed to be part of our family and needed us. My daughter was over the moon !! My son ....not so much at first. I was hurt. He is 7 and thought our family was just fine. That was in January. Now after several more brief talks about it and all the paperchasing.. and excitement from his sister, he is ok with it. He just requests a girl so she wont play with his best friend I know he will LOVE the baby. He is a sweet boy who loves his little sister now. (They share a bed every night by choice).I think you just have to keep it simple and matter of fact with lots of love. Good Luck!
