One way to pass the time

Well call me a sucker, my daughter and I do foster parenting for the local Humane Society. I got a call from them on Tuesday asking if I would please help them out, it is after all kitten and puppy season

I am now the proud "Mother Cat" to 4 one week old kittens. The require bottle feeding every 2 hours, except they sleep through the night. I am having a blast. They are so tiny and adorable. It is definatly keeping my mind off what is going on with our case, and hey it is good practice for when Carlos comes home

Just a thought for anyone suffering from the "I need to mother something" disease.

My oldest daughter and I used to volunteer for our
local shelter
It was very rewarding and fun.
At one time , I had a momma dog w/ 3 puppies and a
momma cat w/ 2 kittens.
This was in addition to our 2 cats and 1 dog.
I felt like I was running a maternity ward for animals.
With a 16 and 3 1/2 year old daughter's at home and a
4 1/2 year old daughter on the way , it's just a bit too much to try to also volunteer now , but some day I'm sure I'll be on duty again.
I made some super good friends working at the shelter.
You see the worst of people there ,but what I like to
remember is the the truly good hearted people I met there .
It was a reminder there are still good ,
caring people in the world.

Thumbs up

Good for you, and THANK YOU!
I'm the AfterCare Manager for PACT Humane Society, and I know how much volunteer organizations depend on kind people like yourself.
I've warned my org. that I won't have much time for volunteer work until my dossier is complete & sent, but that I'll be making up for it during the dreaded 'waiting period'. Not sure who's going to be helping who - at that point I think the cats are going to be as much soul help to me as I am to them
For those of you who have extra time on your hand and like animals, I recommend you contact a local humane society. You don't necessarily have to foster cats at home, there are lots of things they need help with. It really makes you feel good about yourself, and it will keep you busy

You guys are amazing, Thank God for people like you. I would love, love, love to foster but I can honestly say I am not a strong enough person. Once an animal comes into my house I WILL not let it go. I get so attached so fast. Right now I have....a 200 lb mastiff, a collie mix, and three rescued cats with more medical problems than you could possibly imagine. Anyway, you guys are doing such a great thing. THANK YOU

DH and I were thinking about attending an orientation session at our local Humane Society tomorrow to learn about fostering.

We have two feline masters -- old ladies whom we love very dearly that "rule the roost". They spend most of their time napping in our laps. But having some kittens and a Mama cat to nuture and take care of would really help give us the distraction that we need right now.

Thanks for the great advice!

I just want to say thank you for being a puppy and kitty foster mom to all of you who do it. My hubby and I adopted a puppy from a foster home. All I could think was there was no way I could do that (I could never give them up). And their little girls cried when we took the puppy and it broke my heart! I'm a social worker and can deal with a lot of things but not fostering puppies and kitties

it ain't easy

Our first litter of 6 kittens became 5 on one horrible day. One of the kittens who could not meow and was all black explored our washing machine just when hubby was washing the dark clothes. He felt so terrible and took it very hard, as we all did, he even told me, we can keep them all, if you want. Anyway, taking them back was almost as hard as handing Carlos to his foster mom at the end of our visit. Dd and I both cried and cried. They were all placed in new homes the very next day. So then we did 3, one who developed an eye infection and almost lost her eye. They were a little easier, but still sad to return. Then we did 7....that was a mess...neighbor was watching them and gave them goat's milk......eeeeeeekkkkkk nothing like 7 kittens with well, lets just say it was a mess.

We took a small break after that last batch.

Did I mention we have 2 cats, 3 dogs, a ferret and fish of our own?

They love me at the Humane society...I am their best customer. My neighbor asked about us fostering lastnight..he said "isn't that like rent to own for you guys?" lol

What a wonderful thing to do! Maybe you can post some pictures
We just "adopted" our fourth kitten 2 weeks ago. I thought 3 were plenty especially with our upcoming addition. We just couldn't say no when 2 wks ago someone from my dh's work arrived at the office one morning when she heard a strange noise coming from her car. when she went to look, a very frightened kitty jumped out from under the car. apparently the kitten was sleeping somewhere near the engine when the lady started her car and drove to work (35 miles!!!!!). the kitten has some singed fur, her whiskers are short and curled and her eyebrows are gone, but she is otherwise ok. i just took her for shots this am and she has a clean bill of health. she is completely recovered and driving the other 3 cats crazy!
