OT: Bedtimes

I recently had a conversation with a dear friend of mine and we were discussing what time children should be in the bed. We differed completely in our answers so I thought I would bring it here. What time do you think a child 5 years old should be in bed? r

Whenever their Mommy need them to be!!!! I don't know, Rachel... but we are an early to bed family... so I'd think between 8 and 8:30 for your twins...

Thanks Alex! You know my twins well! That is actually about the time they go down. Usually we are in the bed with teeth brushed and PJ's on by 7:30 and we take a few minutes to talk about what will be going on the next day, anything that is going on with them at school and then they say their prayers so by the time that is over it is around 8. My friend said her daughter was allowed to stay up until 10pm!!! I couldn't believe it but fun thing was about two nights later a little girl from their class called here at what time...10 o'clock asking if she could talk to one of the M&Ms! It works for our family and in the morning we are still dragging them out of the bed at 7:00 to get them off to school at 8:00. The boys go down really early also. Right after we put the girls to bed. r BTW...I think someone owes me a phone call!!! r

I have a 4 year old and 7 year old and they are in bed at 7:30 on weeknights. They also have a hard time getting up in the morning especially my older boy who is in 2nd grade and has a very busy activity schedule after school and early evening. They need their sleep and we need our evenings!! Even with the time change and it is staying lighter, they go to bed because I tell them it is bedtime! Hopefully this will continue for a few more years!!

Our girls are also very active in the early evenings with soccer and baseball and even they have noticed over the past couple weeks how tired they have been. I also agree about needing our evenings...with four children, full time job and husband who thinks I'm his fulltime playmate...I need 8:00-11:00 to get everything else done! r

Ours are in at eight except for the babies they go at ten. We all get up early. So it probably depends on what time you need to be out the door. Anna

My son will be 4 and goes to bed at 8:00 pm. I think it depends on the child. On days he wakes very early we try to put him to bed at 7:30 to make up for it.

My oldest is 5 today (Happy Birthday, Dennis!), and we start the bedtime routines at 7:30, and he's in bed by about 7:50, and is always fast asleep by about 8:10. He's up and ready by 6:30 or 7:00 the next morning.

Nite Nite times

No little ones here yet, but between 7:30 and 8:00 for up to 7ish is what I would do. My stepdaugthers (age 15 and 11) were in bed by 9ish and could read or whatever for a half hour, but lights out by 9:30. Kids REALLY need lots of sleep to grow. GH (growth hormone) surges in their sleep.

Rach:

My 11 year old still has an 8:30 bedtime and needs every ounce of sleep he can get. He gets up every morning at 7am for school and it is still like trying to wake the dead to get him up, dressed and into the kitchen for breakfast.

I aim to have him and Sophie in bed by 8:30 each night but my 14 year old thinks she can stay up all night with me... I usually make her go to bed about 10:30 because she is still growing and needs her beauty rest (LOL).

Good luck! You are a great mom!

Sarah

My almost 5 year old still naps every day for 90 minutes in the afternoon, then goes to bed at 8pm, sleeps until 7am. It really depends on the child, I think my ds needs a lot more sleep that most kids his age!

I think that between 8 8:30 is a good time. In our case that my DH works until late most of the time until 7PM I would like him to spend some time with the baby before going to bed!
