DNA Question

How long does it take to get DNA after a baby is born? If they know that the mother is going to put the baby up for adoption after the baby is born why not do it when they are still in the hosp? We have not gotten a referral yet, but just thinking about the visit trip. We want to go over as early as possible, but also want to wait until DNA is done. Thanks for your feedback.

Our DNA was pretty quick, about a month after the baby was born. However, lately it seems like it has been taking longer. I asked that same question, Why don't they just do it at birth. Maybe money? I have no clue.

I "think" that it is because the birth mother has to relinquish her rights 4 times in the process. The first time is at birth when she leaves the baby at the hospital, the second time is at DNA testing, the third time is at the Social Workers interview and finally after the case comes out of PGN.

On our side I know we want the baby to come home yesterday, but if we were on the other side we would want to be given every chance to make sure that we were making the right decision.

The waiting is torture I know. Hang in there!

another reason

The DNA authorization depends upon having specific adoptive parents lined up. It is paid for by the adoptive parents. That can't happen until after referral, so some time after birth.

There is something to wait for at every step along the way. I just take courage from all the happy parents with their babies at home!

Exactly, it is a test required by the US gov't and paid for by the adoptive parents so this cannot be done until after the referral. The test must also be authorized by the US Embassy which involves paperwork - your dossier and paperwork on the baby (which must first be translated into English).

Love, Shelly
