Question about Virginia notary certification process

Hi All,
I'm in CT, but my references (best friends) are in Virginia. They'll be willing to take their notarized letters to the County Clerk if that's what they're supposed to do, but they don't know how to go about it, and neither do I. They're in Arlington County and Fairfax County. Can somebody tell me what to do or direct me to a website or something to find out? I'm just at the start of my paperwork chase, so I don't have any experience with this.
Thanks a million!

I am a Virginia Notary. Are looking to certify that the notary is who he/she is and that they do hold a notary commission? If so, you need to contact the Secretary of the Commonwealth Notary Division and they can provide authentication of the notary. Their website is www.commonwealth.virginia.gov

No need to county certify in Virginia - just the state is needed. Just have them sign in front of the notary and then send the notarized copies to the Secretary of the Commonwealth for ceritification.

Good luck,

Crissie in Fairfax County

No Same Day Service

In Virginia you must send or bring the notarized documents to Richmond. There is no same day service. You mail in or leave the documents and then they return them to you. They are very efficient and a very nice staff. If you want the docs back as quickly as possible, make sure you Fed-Ex in and send in a return Fed-Ex envelope.

Ensure that you have the correct notary signature block typed on your document as there are several diff. ones that are used so don't make a mistake and type the wrong one on it. The woman who handles the paperwork at the Commonwealth of Virginia is very nice, helpful, and accommodating.

Greetings -- I'm in Northern VA, and the majority of my documents had to go to the Secretary of State VA too. Have them send their notarized reference letters to:

Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth
Authentications Department
1111 East Broad Street, 4th Floor
Richmond, VA 23219

The cost is $10.00 per document. The check should be made payable to the Secretary of the Commonwealth. They should include a self-addressed stamped envelope and a cover letter with instructions to return the documents to YOUR address. They should also include a statement on which country the document is being authenticated for. Use Fed Ex or USPS Express Mail to expedite receipt and return of the documents. PM me if you'd like the wording for my cover letter. Best of luck to you!

Wow, thanks to everybody for your help! This whole process seems so overwhelming, and I'm just at the beginning! I'm glad to hear there's no county certification, that saves a step. Thanks a bunch!

Your friends in Virginia can go to their local banks and have the docs notarized for free or any bank and may pay $2. Hope that helps!!
