Question Two at a time

For those of you who have adopted two children at the same time did you have all the money saved up in advance or did you take a loan out for most of the adoption? I have such a strong feeling in my heart that my husband and I should adopt to children at once. But I am so concerned about the money. Is it possible to take out a loan for most of it and refi our mortgage? Any advice would be great. Thank you

We took out a home equity loan for the adoptions, depleted savings, and borrowed about $10,000 from family members.

We did it with savings and a home equity line of credit.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Since our second daughter was not planned, we took out a home equity loan to fund her adoption. We had the money saved for our first adoption. It was a wonderful experience to bring home two at the same time... best wishes in your journey!

I haven't brought two home at once yet, but wanted to bump you up--we're definitely considering it, too!

I also did it with a home equity loan. My company gives a $5000 adoption assistance for each, plus the tax credit, so it works out to be about half of the fees get covered. (Unfortunately, then my boss wouldn't give me any paid leave, so I am back to square one having to go three months with no salary - but it was a nice idea in theory!!!)

My sense was that this was a once-in-a-lifetime expense and that the reasons for adopting twins far outweighed the financial concerns. I know it's risky to use home equity, but it was the only way to do it for me.

Blessings,
Susan in Brooklyn with twins Jonathan and Benjamin

bumping for you as I am curious also. We had all the funds saved for Alex's adoption, but we are currently saving for our next, possibly 2 adoptions. We have a little while before we want to start and haven't decided which program (IA again, or domestic), but we are considering 2 at one time....

Good Luck!!
Brina
