Arrow Guatemala Birth Sibling Registry

I want to inform all the new families about the Guatemala Birth Sibling Registry. The description from website reads:
Quote:

Generally, families who adopt from Guatemala are not told if their children have biological siblings who were also adopted.
You can link to the site here and apply for membership to their database.

A recent poll indicated that it is not the norm to be notified of a birth sibling being available for adoption but the results also indicate that there are some families that have either been contacted to adopt a birth sibling or that they adopted a birth sibling of a child placed with another family. You can view the poll here for results and consequent discussion. Sign that registry!

Oh and one more thing. Sometimes it takes the owners a few days to approve your request for membership so don't get discouraged while waiting.

Very unhappy with my agency due to lack of communication, long process, contract restrictions, and many other reasons. Ask me if you'd like to avoid them.

This is exactly how we found Jeremy's birthsibling. They had been registered for a year and checked every so often before we registered Jeremy. When we suspected a match, the owners checked and then we contacted them via email.

Sure enough it was a match!

I highly recommend signing up.

Just curious, is this how it works? You're supposed to go thru the owners of the database? I thought you were supposed to email the suspected matches directly?

Tina, I found a possible match yesterday, which prompted this post, and was directed by the site owners to contact the person directly. *hoping that it's not a match* They have a database of all members and you can initiate an email to members you need to contact for possible matches. I think the site owners may have been more of a middle person in the past (not for sure) but the site is now pretty HUGE and I can't imagine they could keep up anymore.

Oh, and btw,....keep your contact info updated on the registry!

Bassette - This is great information to share. I'd love to hear your experience with your search and a possible match.

We knew from the SW report that our son had a bio 1/2 sister who was placed for adoption in 2001. So we joined the registry and sure enough they were registered. However, we have tried to contact them several times without any response to our emails. You post prompted me to log back on and see if I can make contact with them...

*heavy sigh* I find a match, email the family and their contact info is not current. The email was returned. I can't tell you how disappointed I am that I may never know if this is Kiran's older brother. I can't say this enough,...please make sure your contact info is current on the sibling registry database.

Ivsmom,

Yes, now you contact the potential match directly through email. When we found Jeremy's sib they didn't list emails and the site managers did it all. Like Bassette said, it has grown alot and was too big a job for the list owners so they changed how the contact is made.

Hope that helps!
Kim

PS. Steph and Anne, I'm sorry to hear your potential matches didn't have current information. Don't give up and keep checking back every so often. You never know when they will decide to update their info.

Question - I registered as soon as the adoption was finalized. I know Bailey has a sibling but the report never stated whether or not the sibling was still living with the birth mother or placed for adoption. Should I assume since they discussed the sibling and mentioned the age and school year the sibling was in, without mentioning adoption or where the child is living, that the child has not been adopted?

If the child is still with the birth mother, I guess I will wait until Bailey is old enough to decide if she wants to meet her birth family before I hire someone to try to locate them. Of course, the birth family may not want contact.

HUGE SIGH.

I found my daugthter's bio-brother through the registry. His mother and I have been corresponding and it's been just wonderful. I'm so grateful that such a resource exists.
