Hello everyone,

I'm just starting out on the process of adopting from Guatemala. I was wondering if anyone else obtaining bc's from NJ had an issue with them just putting your middle initial and not listing your parents. My agency says this could be a problem. I drove to Trenton state vital statistics and I guess they gave me the short version of my bc. Did anyone else's bc from NJ come back that way?

Do I need to get a new bc?

We have two version of my husband's NJ birth certificate. One is about half a page in length. On the top it says something about a certificate of birth has been registered for him. The other is longer and has more info, including his parents' names. We obtained the longer version through Vital Check on the internet.


Mine is from NY, and I had two versions also. My parents' had the short version and I alway thought that was my actual birth certificate. When I applied for a passport, they explained that a longer version is available. So I mailed away for a copy. With the adoption I sent for three more, just in case.

My husband's newly issued bc hasn't arrived yet, but the one he has that was issued in 1990 is about 1/2 page, includes his parents' names and both of his middle names.

I received the long version with my parents name and other info on it. I sent away for mine and it asked on the form the reason for requesting it. Did you mention to them it was for an adoption? If the agency thinks it may be a problem I would get the long one. Better to do it now instead of possibly later.
