This was in my local paper this morning. Notice the parts I highlighted in red. The media coverage of adoption is TERRIBLE!

Speaking of Jessica Simpson, the singer/actress/short-shorts innovator is thinking of following Angelina Jolie and Meg Ryan into the world of insta-motherhood.

But the trendsetter that she is, Simpson isn't looking to Ethiopia, Cambodia or China to fill her luxury nursery. She has her eye on the previously celebrity-untapped orphan market of Mexico.

Simpson has previously said she is interested in adopting.

Her rep, Rob Shuter, tells the Associated Press that Simpson - who is still "exploring options" - and her family have anonymously contributed funds to a smattering of Mexican orphanages for several years. Which we're pretty sure entitles Simpson to one free orphan (with coupon)."

Instamotherhood? Free orphan with coupon? This makes me SICK!

Ugh ugh ugh! If the media coverage was done well, it could be a great thing for children who need homes but I fear that this type of coverage will turn people off. Good for Jessica if she wants to adopt, but sheesh, c'mon media, learn about adoption before you report on it!

Why was I thinking that the program in Mexico was closed? This seems to be the top story everywhere. I really don't know how to put into words how I feel about the way they are putting into words what she is wanting to do.

I did not think adoption from Mexico was closed but I could be wrong. I thought it was just extremely hard bordering on impossible since there are not any hard and fast rules set in place.

Again, I could be wrong.

UPDATE: I used the online paper staff directory and left a voice message for the online news editor. I told her that I believed that the underlying message may have intended to poke fun at Hollywood types and their instant gratification, but that I doubted any of their staff who had adopted, been adopted, suffered infertility, etc. would find the insta-motherhood comment very funny regardless of the satire involved. As I mentioned yesterday, I have no feelings for Jessica Simpson one way or another and I believe that her comment could have been very innocent (at worst ignorant), however, this newspaper -no matter what their political slant- stepped over the line here. Insta-motherhood for one is insta-motherhood for all when read by the ignorant. I doubt anyone would consider our long-time forum members who fight fiercly each day to bring these kids home would consider any of it instant, other than the love.

Crikey!! Insta Motherhood and FREE WITH COUPON.. I truly don't think the "world out there" gets it. The coupon bit dropped my jaw. Disgusting AND unbelievable.


I think I would PASS on any future copies of the newspaper and cancel my subscription.

I don't think the Republic wrote any of those tidbits because I know at least one of them came from a wire service because I read it online yesterday. I think they recycle stuff that's printed in othe papers, like Page Six, the next day. That said, they do choose what goes in and Jessica is hot right now. Call me cynical, but I'm pretty sure this is all to salvage her image because everyone thinks she's responsible for the divorce. (Why no, I don't have a life. Why do you ask? )

Wow-- all I can say is wow how horribly uneducated ans insensitive are those comments. I live in Minnesota and I called the paper (found the number on their website). I spoke with a newsroom assistant and tols him that those comments are completely uncalled for and uneducated. Whether or not they are making fun of celebs is beside the point because those comments are jsut awful, esp the one about a "free orphan with coupon". No one would ever talk that way about someone rescueing an animal because it's not politically correct, but children are fair game. I think not.
I would encourage all of you to call or email them and complain. I told them that they have raised the ire of the national international adoption community.

That is just horrible! I hope, if she really has a heart for kids, she will step in and vocally reprimand the media for these type of comments. Or Angelina or Meg...... somebody say something!!!!!

I think you are right, Aline. These comments are from a wire service. But the Arizona Republic thought it was a good idea to print these comments. I am frustrated that anyone would think this was appropriate in any way.
