Unhappy Is it true-no Guatemalan adoptions starting 2007?

Help! I was just on guatadopt.com and I noticed that it says that there will be no Guatemalan adoptions starting in 2007. Is this true? I hope not, my husband and I were just beggining the process. If this is true does anyone out there think we could pull this off by Dec 06 if we start now. We don't even have an agency. I am really scared, it has been our dream to adopt from Guatemala. Please help!

There have been some very good discussions about this lately...go back through last couple pages of posts and you will see them all.

The short answer seems to be that you would be fine as your case would be in process. I think most experts have always believed that whenever these threats of a shutdown occur, those who have already received a referrral and submitted their POA would be grandfathered in.

That said, our paperwork was finished in March/April (everything in March, homestudy in late April) and our son came home in August, so you may have it done in plenty of time.

Hang in there and good luck,

I understand your concern, however with international adoption there always seems to some sort of threat of adoptions coming to a halt or a new law trying to be passed. While this seems to be a stronger threat then some of the others it is still uncertain that adoptions will shut down at all. We will not see the outcome of what will happen for sometime. I'm not saying to not be concerned, but it isn't a reason to NOT start an adoption this year. As always, you need to learn as much as you can about Guatemala adoptions and follow this issue as the rest of us are. Good Luck with your journey and keep us update on your process!

Is it definitely true? NO. Is there a reason for concern? Yes. Even if the worst happens and the US stops Guatemalan adoptions, current theory is that it would not happen until well in to 2007, perhaps 2008. That gives everyone plenty of time to work through the political process to prevent it.

There is always uncertainty with international adoptions. Don't let that sway your decision.
