Guat Adoption Experts (re PEZ's post on sick child)

I thought I'd ask these questions in a separate thread since I didn't want to sidetrack the other.

Does anyone know if there are any consequences for the attorney or facilitator? For example, does PGN learn of the child's condition? Does the embassy get involved and/or possibly ban the atty?

Good questions and I don't really know the answer to them.
What I don't understand is how this child could get past the embassy doctor's exam...
Our son had to see a specialist in Guate just to check out a heart murmur which here in the US nobody could find anymore...

I wish this family all the best...

I echo Jerryscuba in that due to the previous health concerns of my daughter, the Embassy doctor took an extremely long time and did a thorough exam. He even went over all the concerns with us and then spent about 45 minutes just reviewing her test results before he would give the ok.

My question on this...would the Embassy requirements be the same...baseline...for Guatemala as it would be for Russia? The reason I ask is my daughter was very sick...and she sailed right thru the exam. And any of the kids who were much sicker...were also 'passed' right thru. It is a very basic exam in Moscow...very, very, VERY basic.

So, maybe the doctor (is there more than one) who examined the child either just went by the 'baseline' or decided that the child was sick and he needed to get the heck home???

Just a thought.

My first thought (after my feelings of outrage) were exactly what Jerry said. How could this little one pass the Embassy exam? Is there a different exam/requirements for special needs children? Could he have been considered special needs even though his adopting parents weren't aware of it?

Anyway, I would love an adoption experts view on all of this too....so bumping this up

I can only post my experience with the Embassy doctor and in doing so will also bump this thread up.

When we accepted Bailey's referral, she was a healthy baby girl. Fast forward three months and we found out that she had a severely enlarged liver and spleen. We also found out that after running some initial blood tests, her blood work had them thinking she had Leukemia.

She was then switched over to the care of a well known doctor in Guatemala and also placed under a hematologist's care. The hematologist requested a series of lab tests to be run on her. We then hired a well known IA doctor to review her tests and this doctor requested many tests as well. All were done and Leukemia was ruled out. She was severely anemic and her blood work was still extremely odd and her organs were still enlarged.

It should also be noted that upon learning she may have Leukemia, she was moved out of one foster home and into another one. She was put on a series of meds, she was given and iron supplement and also put on a new formula with iron.

More tests were run and it showed she was improving. Then her doctor detected a heart murmur. She was then taken to a cardiologist for an echo. We were there for that. That echo showed a slight hole in her heart but it was so small it will probably fuse on its on.

On pick up trip, we actually went to the Embassy medical appointment which I know most people no longer go to. The Embassy doctor started to review her paperwork and then started hammering questions at my attorney's assistant (we will call her "AA" to keep it simple). AA was explaining everything to him and had to give him even more paperwork. He then thoroughly questioned us on her health concerns:

Were we aware there were some health concerns?
What all were the concerns?
What all tests were done?
What were the results of those tests?

On and on the questions went. He did an exam of her (feeling all organs, taking temperature, weighing her and measuring her, he tested whether she followed his hand when he moved it in front of her, he testes all sorts of developmental things with her etc). Then he asked for some other test results and went to his office to study them. It took him a good 30-45 minutes of reviewing the paperwork. He even had AA have some more information faxed over to him to explain something in the paperwork.

FINALLY, he said that everything we knew he found to be true. He said her tests results looked good and she was healthy and congratulated us.

I must admit that when he finally said that I felt like I was going to faint. I had no idea the extent of my nervousness. I think I was afraid he was going to say something was wrong beyond what we knew or that we could not adopt her. I just know that I almost passed out with relief.

It should be noted also though that on the Embassy appointment day, we basically went through the exact same ordeal at the last window (without the medical exam obviously). They seemed very intent on making sure we knew that there had been health concerns and that the tests showed that she did not have Leukemia but that she did have a case of anemia and an innocent heart murmur. So much so that they would not state these things and asked if we knew but rather made us state everything we knew first.

I was a little less nervous at the appointment but it is still very unsettling because there is that real fear someone will say NO before you finish.

Strange............

Bumping up too - very curious about this....

I know the embassy doctor can be very tough and in fact - is overly cautious about conditions - this seems strange that this poor baby boy passed this doctors exam.

I know with all three of our kids we adopted, at the embassy appointment they went over each childs exam with us and was very thourough - and our kids were healthy.

Hoping someone can shed some light on this......

Juans Mom answered this on here, but for some reason it was taken off quickly !
We should protecrt innocent children and parents and not agencies who allow such thing to happen.
