Post-adoption/Readoption questions

We brought our son home in December (hurrah!) and are still awaiting his green card (don't get me started on all the fun we've had w/ USCIS throughout the whole adoption...)

Could someone tell me what the order is of green card, name change, ssn, readoption? (And if I'm missing anything in these steps?) From reading the IRS booklet, it appears we take the adoption tax credit in the year of the re-adoption, not the year we bring him home (in the event there is a difference). It is my understanding that one cannot get an ssn w/o the green card, but can one start the readoption w/o either? And what is the readoption process all about?

Sorry for all the questions - just a little frustrated and somewhat confused.

Thanks!

All we needed for Alex's readoption was the adoption paperwork that we got in Guatemala. We didn't need to show his greencard. I think the main reason, at least for us, for readoption is so that Alex now has a state birth certificate. If we ever need more copies, we can just order another as we would ours.

We did need to show his greencard to get his SSN, but we did this after we did the readoption and name change.

We did:
- green card (ours came quickly though)
- recognition of foreign adoption - our state requires this and not a readoption regardless of type of Visa. Here'a a link info on each state http://naic.acf.hhs.gov/general/lega...ernational.pdf
- applied for state BC
- sent in N600 with court decree from RFA
- got SS#
- new BC came (took about three months)
- C of C came (took about four months)
- went to Soc Sec Admin. and changed alien status
- filed G884 for original paperwork returned (took one week!!!)

This is what we did:
-got the green card
-got SS card
-had our post-placement visit done (in conjunction with the readoption)
-filed the readoption paperwork (for us this included getting a state issued BC and name change)
-go back to SS office and get name changed
-have yet to file CoC and G-884

We would have waited to get the SSN after readoption, but we needed to do it right away for taxes last year. The number of post-placements will depend on your state and/or your agency.
